COLLAPSIBLE VAPOR-BATH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,857, dated April 21, 1896. Application filed February 1, 1895. Serial No. 536,915. (No model.) Patented in Austria November 6, 1894, No. i l/5,819.

Beit known that I, GUIDO MAX STERNKOPF, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Eibenstock, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Vapor- Baths, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Austria, dated November 6, 1894, No. le/5,819,) of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a collapsible vapor-bath which can be conveniently transported and taken apart for packing, repairing, and other such purposes.

Referring to the drawings which accompany the specification to aid the description, Figure 1 is a vertical section, Fig. 2 a broken section on the line 00 0a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 an elevation of this improved bath, Figs. 4: to 7 showing details of the construction of various parts.

This apparatus consists, essentially, of a basin, a cylinder of suitable fabric, and convenient guiding means.

The basin or receptacle A, of tinned sheetiron, has the form of ahollow cylinder closed at the bottom. Upon two diametrically-opposite parts is fixed, by means of solder or rivets, a socket or sleeve a. The uprights c (of gas-pipe) are held in the sockets a by means of set-screws b. A ring cl, of tinned iron, is fixed by solder or rivets to the inner surface of the basin A. On this ring (1 is placed a second tinned-iron ring 6, to which is sewed the lower edge of the flexible casing 13, which is preferably made of leather. The ring 6 is pressed down on the ring at by the two springs f, fixed by rivets to the uprights c, and is thus held in position. To the upper edge of the flexible casing B is firmly sewed a ring 9, of fiat tinned iron, Figs. 5 and 6. To this ring g are riveted vertical pins h, Figs. 6 and 7, which enter the sliding block 2', that is guided by the uprights c, and are fixed thereto by means of set-screws 70. In order to be able to displace vertically the ring g according to the height of the person using the bath, this sliding block 6, which forms, essentially, a U -shaped piece, the arms of which are guided by the uprights c, is furnished with an arm Z, having an opening Z, and with an opening 2", these openings receiving a bolt m, which may be inserted in one of the holes a in the uprights 0, thus serving as a support for the sliding piece 1?. The ring g is forthwith fixed in position at any desired height.

A piece of leather D, covered below with satin, is sewed to the ring 9 at the same time, as the latter is fixed to the casing B, so as to serve as a cover for the latter and to surround the neck of the person using the apparatus, Figs. 1, 5, and 6.

Near the neck is arranged a leather collar D, Fig. 1, for the purpose of protecting the satin from wet. This collar D is provided with a cord n, whereby it may be tightly fastened to the neck of the person using the apparatus.

The apparatus or vapor-bath is worked as follows: When the sliding piece 4. is in its lowest position, the person enters the basin A, and after having been seated on a stool placed inside the apparatus he or she raises the ring 9 until it reaches the height of his orher neck, when the said person shoots the bolts into the holes 0 of the uprights c. The collarD, which has, when the cord at is untied and the ring g is raised, a cylindrical shape, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, assumes now a flat shape when this cord at is pulled and has the fully-extended form shown in Fig. 1. Steam or medicated vapor can now be admitted through an opening 0 of the basin or receptacle A.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is-- 1. A collapsible vapor-bath, consisting of a basin, a flexible fabric forming a chamber for the body of the user of the bath, a ring attached to the lower edge of the fabric and inserted in the basin, a spring engaging said ring and holding itin position, a top piece on said fabric adapted to be drawn around the neck of the user, vertical guide-rods on the basin, guides moving on said rods and attached to the upper edge of the collapsible fabric, and devices for locking the guides upon the rods, substantially as described.

2. A collapsible bath provided with a basin, a flexible fabric forming a chamber for the body of the user, and a ring attached to the lower edge of the fabric and inserted in the basin, and a spring engaging said ring and holding it in position, substantially as described.

3. The combination in a collapsible bath, with a basin and flexible chamber connected therewith, of sockets on the basin, guide-rods in said sockets, guides Working on said rods, a ring connected with said guides and attached to the upper edge of the chamber, said 10 ring being removably connected with said guides, and devices for locking said guides at variable heights on said rods, substantially as described.
