To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, Jenn W. Joirns'ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at 'lrempealeau, in the county of Treinpealeau and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement lIlBlOW-TOICl'lGS, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements n blow torches and more particularly to that class wherein the torch is detachably applied to a furnace for convenience in heating sol-i dering irons, receptacles and other devices. The primary object of this inventionis to provide a stand for the blow torclr into which the blow torch can be locked with its burnei' applied to the furnace, said stand being portable so that it can be carried by a workman. l v
Among additional objects of this invention are, simpler construction and means for utilizing the heat of a blowtorch more effectively than in prior devices.
In the accompanying drawings forn'iing part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blow torch having my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan of the furnace floor, a detail ofthe bail and of the torch being illustrated; Fig. a side elevation of an elbow tube of the furniace; Fig. 1- is a section of Fig. tltaken upon the line A-A, Fi 5 is a side elevation of a detail of the stand showing a furnace for heating a receptacle containing solder or other material applied thereto, and Fig. 6 is a section of Fig. 2 on the line Bl3.
In the drawings A represents a blow torch of usual construction having an ordinary burner tube 2, and B represents a stand for carrying a blow torch on which is mounted a furnace C. The furnace is provided with a floor 3 made of sheet metal or other suitable material having vertical side flanges 4; and a serrated forward ledge 5, the latter being adapted to hold the shanks of soldering irons such as 6, while the irons proper are resting in the furnace. To the floor 3 is detachably secured an arched plate Gforining the roof of the furnace having its inner end partly closed and its opposite end open.
The lower side edges 7 and 8 of the arched plate are provided with pins 9. which are adapted to be engaged in perforations in the flanges 41: to hold the plate in place. The action of contracting the lower edges on the open ends of the plate withdraws the pins 9 from the flanges l leaving the plate free to Specification of Letters Patent. lApplieation filed September 11, 1911. A deflector 12 is formed integral with the elbow 11 lying directly below the opening 10 of thefloor 3 and is triangular in form having one of the angles pointing dmvnward and the sides thereof serving to bifureate the flame issuing from the burner of the blow torch and deflect the bifurcations through the opening 10 toward the two sides of the space below the roof of the tli'urnaee. The upper end of the elbow has a flange 13 which is secured by bolts l t to the lower surface of the floor The floor 3 is supported upon four standards, 15, 16, 17 and 18, each of which is extensible being made in two sections, one of which is slotted at 19 to receive a set bolt 20 for the purpose of binding the 1 The forward pair oil standards 1? and 18 are inclined from the tray back toward the floor of the .turnace tor the purpose of bracing the furnace and imparting stiibility to it.
The connections between the lower ends of the standards by means of the bolts 21 and between the upper ends of the standards and the floor of the furnace by means of the bolts 26 are pivotal so that the height of the fioorof the furnace above the tray may be varied by adjusting the lengths of the standards. WVhen desired a bail 27 can be secured to the floor of the furnace as illustrated in Fig. 1 for carrying the blow torch and furnace. i
It is obvious that other forms of furnaces may be employed and used for other purposes than heating tools. In Fig. 5 I have illustrated one of these other forms in which the furnace is in the shape of a collar 28 placed over a pair of outwardly extending flanges 29 and 2-50, extending across the floor of the furnace for holding said collar in place. Into this collar a melting pct 31 may be placed for melting solder or heating any material desired. The lower edge of the col lar is substantially square and slotted at 32 for the purpose of forming a vent at each side of the stand for the egress of gases issuing from the blow torch.
It will be noted that the flanges 29 and 30 serve to form lateral supports for the sides and end of the roof of the furnace C, also vertical supports for the shanks of soldering irons or other tools which are placed in the furnace to be heated. In the use of the roof of the furnace C and of the sleeve 28 or any otl er form of furnace used with this device the flame is directed in such a manner that its heat is applied most advantageously to the device which is heated in the furnace, the bifurcating of the flame serving to perform this function.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to "epresent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination, a portable blow torch having a body and burner tube, a stand having a tray for carrying said torch, clamps on said tray for adjust-ably and detachably securing said body thereto, a furnace on said stand above said torch, and an elbou tube depending from said furnace and with the lower end of which said burner tube is adapted to be connected.
2. A device of the class set forth, comprising in combination, a blow torch having a burner tube, a furnace above said torch, an elbow connected between said furnace and tube through which the flame from said burner tube is conducted into said furnace, and a stand supporting said blow torch and furnace adjustably to vary the height of the lower end of said elbow to receive the end of said burner tube. 3. device of the class set forth, comprising, in combination, a blow torch having a burner tube, a furnace above said torch, an elbow adapted to'form a connection between said furnace and tube to conduct the flame from the burner tube upwardly into said furnace and a stand for supporting said furnace having a tray below to support said blow torch, said tray being adjustably secured to said stand to vary the distance between said tray and furnace and admit the burner tube into the lower end of said elbow.
4. A device of the class set forth, comprising, combination, a blow torch having a burner tube, a furnace above said torch, a detachable elbow secured to the floor of said furnace, said elbow having a depending lower end to which said burner tube is adapted to be adjusted and a deflector formed integral therewith and extending across the upper end of its passage and adapted to divide a current of heat passing upwardly through said elbow from said burner tube, a stand for supporting said furnace having a tray adapted to support said torch and clamps pivotally secured to said tray for'detachably holding the body of said torch on said tray.
