UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

GAS-HEATER.
roeaaaa.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed July 14, 1913. Serial No. 779,037.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GnAnLns J. JOHNSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of. Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas heating devices employing a Bunsen burner and has for its object to produce a heater adapted for a considerable number of uses and usable in a variety of ways, from that of a simple hand torch to that of a mufile furnace.
The invention therefore consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved heater, the upper part being in section; Fig. 2 is an underside view of the upper platform or table; Fig. 3 is a plan of the device with the upper platform removed and the burner turned down into horizontal position; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a cylindrical cap for use on the table to create a muflie.
In the drawings, A designates a Bunsen burner having a nipple B for attachment in any desired way to a gas supply.
C designates a cock opened and closed by lever D.
E refers to a pilot tube leading from nipple B to the top or the burner nozzle.
The details of the Bunsen jet and its regulation form no part of this invention.
The nipple B is threaded at b to take a thumb-nut F, and passes through a stirrupshaped clamp G. This clamp fits about a squared standard or post H rising from the base I, to which it is attached as by a setscrew J. This clamp prevents the burner from turning about the post but permits of its being adjusted vertically thereon, and be-- cause the nipple may turn in the ends of the clamp, the burner may be tilted to any desired angle and clamped in place by the thumb-nut. Atthe upper end of the post, which is preferably turned cylindrical a short distance to enter a round socket, is mounted the table or platform K. A short shoulder at k engages the square part of the i post and thus maintains the table in centralized position with respect to the burner.
N0 fastening is required for the table, and
by means of the handle L it may be lifted on or off at pleasure. When the table is removed, the burner may be turned at any desired angle to the post or liftedofi the post and used as an ordinary hand torch.
The table is preferably round with a cylindrical throat at K, to admit air, and with suitable ribs K for the support of things to be heated. On the table may be mounted a cylindrical muffle chamber M, notched at m to fit the ribs and closed at the top by a removable lid N supported on lugs 0. In the lid are airholes n, and the lid may be lifted on or off by inserting a rod or lifter in one of them. The chamber is provided with a handle O for lifting it. One side of the chamber is flattened at M and provided with an opening M and over that a pivoted damper P, so that a rod, tool or soldering copper may be inserted at the side, and the full benefit of the muflie be thus availed of.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a gas heater, the combination of a base, a post rising therefrom, a clamp adapted to partially embrace said post, aburner having a lateral branch-pipe or nipple adjustable in said clamp, and a thumb-nut threaded on said nipple.
2. In a gas heater, the combination of a base, a post rising therefrom, a removable table or platform adapted to rest on top of said post, a clamp adapted to partially embrace the post, and a burner having a lateral branch pipe adjustably mounted in said clamp for the purpose set forth.
3. In a gas heater, the combination of a base, an angular post rising therefrom, a clamp partially embracing the post, a burner having a lateral bran-ch pipe adjustably mounted in said clamp, and atable removably mounted on the upper end of the post, and having a shoulder to engage one of the flat sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
