GAME OF SKILL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,325, dated April 14, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RICHARD TEICHMANN, a citizen of the German Empire, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games of Skill, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved game of skill, to which I have given the name Game of hearts, and in which a rolling body or indicator is to be balanced and brought to a goal on a suitable supporting-plate; and the invention consists of a game of skill, which comprises a rimmed supporting-plate having a goal and subdivisions extending from said goal, and a rolling body or indicator that is placed onsaid plate, so as to be transferred to the goal, said rolling indicator being formed of two rounded-off or heart-shaped sections connected at right angles with each other at their adjacent ends and. made from one integral blank, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved game of skill. Figs. 2 and 3are top views of modified forms of the same. central sect-ion of the same on line 4; at, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a like section showing a slightlymodified form of the supporting-plate of the game. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the rolling indicator, drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 7 is a top view of the blank from which the rolling indicator is made.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting-plate of my improved game of skill. The plate A is made of circular, square, or other shape and of sheet metal, hard rubber, cardboard, or other suitable material and provided with a raised rim a. On the depressed portion of the supporting-plate A is arranged a goal G, which may be concentric to the rim a, or located at any other point on the plate A. The remaining space on the plate A is divided by lines d into sections, which are marked with any suitable words or quotations, according to the name and character which is to-be given to the game. .7

Fig. 4 is a vertical formed of two rounded-off or heart-shaped sections 12 b, that are arranged at right angles to each other and connected at their adjacent portions, is placed on the plate and has to be played into the goal G. To render the game somewhat more entertaining and interesting,

' the goal portion of the plate may be slightly raised from the under side, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the difliculty of playing the rolling body into the goal portion is increased. Any other similar obstructions may be arranged on the plate A by raising the supporting-plate at other points. The rolling body or indicator B is made of a single blank having a central connecting-web 1) between the two sections of the blank, which sections are separated from each other by laterally-inclined slits b so that the rounded-off or heart-shaped sections can be readily bent up and placed in position at right angles to each other. The rolling indicator can also be made of cast metal, such as pewter, instead of sheet metal, or by soldering two separate heart-shaped pieces together at right angles.

The supporting-plate is either held by the fingers at the rim or placed on the palm of the hand and slightly tilted one way or the other, so that the indicator rolls freely from one side of the plate to the other. It requires some skill in arresting the movement of the indicator when it runs across the plate so. as to place it in the goal. This appears to be done easily enough; but on trying it the player will find that the indicator has a tendency not to stop in the goal, but to shoot over the same toward one side or the other of the plate. If the player succeeds in stopping the rolling indicator, it will be found more often outside of the goal in one or the other of the marked sections. It takes some time and practice to bring the indicator into the goal.

The subdivisions of the supporting-plate that are arranged around the goal portion G can be provided with suggestive and humorous inscriptions, which are either printed in suitable colors on the plate'or on a separate layer of paper or other material that is cemented onto the depressed portion of the plate, so that thereby a certain comical and ludicrous element is imparted to the game, especially when the same is played by several persons in succession and when the inscriptions on the sections on which the rolling indicator finally arrives are read off for the benefit of the company.

The title and inscriptions of the game can be varied so that thereby a considerable range for the game is obtained.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A game of skill, consisting of a rimmed supporting-plate having a goal portion and radial subdivisions around said goal portion, a rolling indicator or marker having two rounded-off or heart-shaped sections arranged at right angles to each other and movable on said plate, substantially as set forth.
