DUPLICATE-WHIST BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 650,453, dated May 29, 1900.
Application filed February 5, 1900. Serial No- 4,035. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ALTER CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, county of Jackson, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in I) uplicate-\Vhist Board s, of which the following is a specification. I My invention relates to duplicatewhist boards and aims to provide a cheap and convenient substitute for the expensive boards now in use, this being a matter of importance in View of the fact that a considerable number of such boards are employed in playing the game. My improvement relates especially to card-pockets in such boards, formed within the material of the board itself, said pockets being adapted to receive and hold the various hands of cards after being played by the various players, so that said hands will remain attached to the boards separate and intact until they are again brought into requisition in the course of the play, as will be readily understood by those familiar with the game.
The drawing is a perspective View of a duplicate-whist board constructed according to my invention. It may be made preferably of pasteboard or similar material having some degree of tenacity and elasticity and may be provided with a covering of cloth or paper to add to its appearance and durability.
Arranged around the board, one upon each side, is a series of pockets 1 2 3 4 for holding the various hands of cards, said pockets occupying a central position on each side of the board. The central portion of each pocket is formed by cutting two preferably parallel incisions 5 through the board and then extending said incisions outwardly upon each side in divergent lines 6 to a suitable distance. The incisions thus made form in the material bridge-pieces or loops 7, which may be separated from the margins 8 of the board upon each side of said loops and lifted up, so as to leave in the space between such bridges and the body of the board receptacles or pockets, within which the several hands of cards 9 may be inserted, as shown at 1 2.
To insert the cards in the pockets, the central portion of a bridge 7 is seized between the thumb and finger and raised slightly from the lateral margins 8, and the cards may then be inserted, as shown. To facilitate grasping the bridges in such operation, recesses 10 are formed in the lateral margins upon each side of the bridges, so that such margins will not be in the way, and to facilitate pushing the cards out of the pockets finger-openings 11 are provided on the inner side of each pocket, through .which the finger may be inserted to more readily engage the edges of the cards.
Scoring devices 12, preferably two in number, are also provided upon each board to indicate the number of tricks taken by each set of partners. These may be located at any convenient points on the board, preferably at the right hand of two of the players. They are formed by cutting parallel longitudinal incisions 13 at a suitable distance apart through the material of the board, leaving intervening tongues 14, which may be lifted up or pressed downward and separated slightly from the body of the board. Said tongues are inscribed with numbers from 1 up to 13, arranged in a vertical line. Markers 15 are inserted between the tongues 14 and the'adjacent edges of the board, and by moving said markers from point to point in the series of numbers the tricks scored by each side may be indicated.
The word Dealer is usually inscribed upon one side of such boards to indicate the position of the dealer, and an arrow is placed in the center of the board pointing to the cards of the elder hand or first player.
Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A duplicate-whist board of pliable material containing a series of card-pockets formed by incisions extending through the body of the board, said pockets comprising bridgepieces having narrowed central portions and divergent end portions, convergent lateral margins upon each side of said bridge-pieces, said margins having recesses in their central portions, adjacent to the narrowed portions of said bridge-pieces, said bridge-pieces bein g separable from said margins to permit the insertion of the cards between them, substan tially as set forth.
2. A duplicate-whist board of pliable mate rial, comprising a series of pockets formed by scoring-slots provided with removable markcutting incisions through the body of the ers, substantially as set forth. to board, leavingbridge-pieces or loops, between In testimony whereof I aifix my signature which and the body of the board the cards in the presence of two witnesses.
may be inserted, said board being also pro- \VALTER CLARKE. Vided with recesses extending through it on Witnesses:
each side of said bridges, finger-openings on K. M. IMBODEN,
the inner side of each of said pockets, and M. L. LANGE.
