SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,245, dated April 14, 1896. Application filed October 12, 1895. Serial No. 565,504. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES NELSON \VIL- LIAMS, of Mobile, in the county'of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mucilage-Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in protectors for mucilage-receptacles, theobject being to provide means for preventing the clogging and closing up of the mouth of the receptacle by reason of the brush coming in contact therewith.

A further object is to provide a simple and durable device, cheap to manufacture, and adapted to be used in connection with receptacles having mouths of varying diameters.

With these objects in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of my improvement applied on a mucilage-receptacle, the brush being showninits elevated or normalposition. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the brush being shown in its depressed position. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical. section, the protector being removed from the receptacle; and Fig. 4 illustrates the removable annular flange in its operative position on the tube or barrel.

A represents a tube or barrel, preferably constructed of metal, the top or upper end 1 thereof being provided with a hole 2, from which depends a sleeve 3, while the lower end thereof is open for the free passage of the brush, to be hereinafter referred to. Tube or barrel A is provided on its exterior and at a suitable point between its ends with an annular flange 4. This flange may be cast integral or otherwise rigidly secured to said tube or barrel, or it may be constructed of any suitable flexible material and removably supported thereon, as shown in Fig. 4. Tube or barrel A and its connected parts, to be hereinafter referred to, is supported through the medium of flange 4, the diameter of which latter may be varied, as desired, but is preferably of sufficient width to rest on the ledge surrounding the mouth of different-sized receptacles.

The brush 5 is provided with a handle (5, constructed of any suitable material, which latter projects upwardly through sleeve 3 and terminates a suitable distance above tube or barrel A. Handle 6 is provided at a point above brush 5 with a collar 7, which latter is adapted to come in contact with the lower end of sleeve 3, whereby the upward movement of said handle is limited. Encircling a portion of the exposed part of handle 6 is a coiled spring 8, the lower end of which latter rests on the upper end of tube or barrel A, while the upper end thereof rests in contact with a rubber ring or collar 9, said ring or collar be ing preferably movably secured on said handle for the purpose of increasing and decreasing the tension of spring 8, as well as to regulate the plunge of handle 6 into the receptacle.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the tube or barrel A, instead of having its flange cast integral therewith or secured rigidly thereon, is provided with a flexible ring or collar 10. By this construction of separable ring or collar I am enabled with but slight additional cost to make my improvement adaptable to receptacles'of all kinds, notwithstanding the diameters of their mouths, as one or more rings or collars of various widths can be sold with each protector, or the collar may, if desired, be made of unusual width.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the liquid contained in the receptacle cannot at any time during the manipulation of my protector come in contact with the mouth or neck of said receptacle, and hence a clogging of that portion of the receptacle is absolutely prevented. The brush when not in use is held within tube or barrel A by the action of spring 8. When it is desired to operate the protector, the handle thereof is forced downward, which action compresses spring 8 and plunges brush 5 into the mucilage or other liquid, after which pressure is removed from the handle. The spring 8 then expands, thus drawing brush 5 again within tube or barrel A. The protector is then removed from the receptacle, the handle again pressed downward a sufficient distance to bring the brush below the level of the tube or barrel, after IOO which the brush is ready for use. The protector is returned to its normal position after pressure has been removed from the handle, thus insuring the introduction of that part of tube or barrel A below the flange without get-- ting any of the liquid on the mouth or neck of the receptacle.

It is evident that changes in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be made without avoiding my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described; but,

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with a protector for mueilage-brushes, consisting of a tube or barrel adapted to enter and rest upon the neck of a bottle, said tube or barrelhaving an opening in its upper end, and sleeve or bearing depending froin the top of the tube or barrel into the latter, of a mucilage-brush having sliding connection in said sleeve or bearing, said brush having projections thereon above and below the top of the barrel, and a spring mounted upon it at a point between the top of the barrel and one of the projections, substantially as set forth.
