J. A. WILLIAMS.- BUGKSAW.
No. 568,137. Patented Apr. 14,1896.
UNITED "STATES 1 PATENT OFFICE...
JOHN A. WVILLIAMS, OF HELENA, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR OF SEVEN-EIGHTHS TO THOS. F. WILLIAMS, CHARLES M. WILLIAMS, AUGUST WIESENI-IORN,
EPIIRAIM OLESON, AND HENRY ASMUSSEN, OF SAMEPLACE.
BUCKSAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,137, dated April 14, 1896. Application filed January 21, 1896. Serial No. 576,357. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-lel ena, in the county of Lewis and Clarke and 5 State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bucksaws, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the saw with the blade under tension ready for use; Fig. 2, a similar View with the blade loosened and the spring-frame relaxed; Fig. 3, an edge view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4C, a detail plan of the handle and tension-lever; Fig. 5, a detail section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6, a detail view showing a modified form of the tension-lever.
This invention relates to bucksaws and crosscut-saws, and its object is to improve the construction and render it cheaper and stronger and lighter, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
The frame is formed of a single piece of 2 5 thin spring-steel bent to form the back portion a and the two end portions Z) Z), the back portion being curved slightly downward to give the required elasticity and the end portions inclining downward and outward but in 0 the same vertical plane. The frame is formed of a fiat bar provided along the center of its inner or under side with a continuous rib or flange 0, giving to the frame-bar a substantially T shape in cross-section. An adjustable 3 5 handle cl is attached to the upper part of the end bar I), this handle being provided with a clip cl, which embraces the side edges of the bar but does not touch the central rib c, and which is provided with a set-screw d to en- 40 able it to be fastened at any desired point along the bar. The saw-blade e is pivoted at its outer end to an ear or ears 6, secured to the lower end of the end bar I), and at its other end is pivoted between the upper bifurcated ends of a tension-lever), this tension-lever being pivoted at f to an extension of the fiat rib c and being provided with a handle f at its lower end below the lower end of the bar I). The upper end of this tension-lever is curved inwardly at f, where it connects with the end of the saw-blade. The rib c of the bar I) fits nicely between the bifurcated parts of the tension-lever and the lever is lockedin place while the saw is under tension by means of a small pin g, which is passed through suitable 5 5 registering holes in the lever and the em-' braced portion of the extended rib, the lever when locked in posit-ion being approximately in line with the end bar I). It will be observed that to put the saw under tension ready for use it is simply necessary to spring the end bars closer together and pass the locking-pin 9 through the registering. holes. The curvature in the back portion (L partially straightens out and gives the necessary tension to the blade. The main feature is the central inwardly-extending rib on the frame-bar, which is located in perfect alinement with the saW-blademhereby all torsional strain on the blade and all tendency to sidewise deflection is avoided, and whereby the frame may be made much stronger with the same weight of material. Bifurcating the tension-lever and pivoting it on the central rib brings the tension-line of the saw-blade directly in line with the central rib of the frame and makes the pull direct and positive.
As shown in Fig. 6, the tension-lever may be made in the form of a curved bar f pivoted to the end bar Z7 at a point above the sawblade and extending upwardly alongside the end bar b,this form of tension-lever being preferably locked to the end bar I) by means of a sliding loop f In this instance a stationary handle it it may be secured at the respec- 8 5 tive ends of the end bar 19.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is-- In a crosscut or buck saw, the combination, of a frame constructed of a single bar of sprin gsteel bent to form the back portion and the two end bars, said frame-bar being provided with an integral longitudinal rib projecting centrally from its under or inner side, a saw blade pivoted at one end to one of the end bars In testimony whereof I affix my signature and lying in direct alinement with said rib, a in presence of two Witnesses. tension-lever f pivoted to the rib 0f the other end bar and to the adjacent end of the saw- JOHN A. WILLIAMS. 5 blade and being bifurcated to embrace said Vitnesses:
parts, and being provided With a handle and T. W. BURKE,
locking means, substantially as described. H. O. STERLING.
