Description

(N0 Mod l.)
T'N' ATKINSON.
OAR K.
Patented Apr. 14, 1896.
NITED STATES THOMAS N. ATKINSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
OAR-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 558,023, dated April 14, 1896. Application filed January 14, 1896. Serial No. 575,475. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. ATKINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Locks, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspecification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to oar-locks 5 and it consists of novel improvements in the manner of securing the same to the gunwale or side of the boat, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an oar-lock and its adjuncts embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent partial sectional views and side elevations of oar-locks and their adjuncts, showing another embodiment of my invention. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of the socket portion of the device removed from the position seen in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an oar-lock, the same having the usual U -shaped contour, and a ball portion B of the balLandsocket joint depending therefrom.
E designates the socket portion of said joint, which is best seen in Fig. i, and consists of the depending partly-spherical or cup shaped socket or member D, which has a flange or ear 0 projecting laterally therefrom, by which it is secured in place upon the gun- Wale or side E of the boat, the ball portion 13 being received in said socket portion, it be ing noticed that the inturned upper end or flange E of the socket freely embraces the neck 13 of the ball 13, so that while the ball has freedom of motion in the socket it cannot be removed therefrom. The said socket members E are in the present instance two in number, and their edges H abut, as will be understood from Fig. 1, it being especially noted that the socket portion D is deeply seated in the cavity Fin the gunwale or side of the boat and is thus rendered not liable to displacement during the act of propelling the boat.
In Fig. 2 the oar-lock and the ball portion of the joint are the same as above described; but the socket portions E of the device do not set in the wood of the gunwale, as shown in Fig. 1, but project above the same, as shown at D, the parts being held in position by means of the ears or flanges O, as before.
In Fig. 3 the oar-lock A and the ball portion B of the joint are the same as already described; but the socket portions are provided with an upwardly-extending portion D and a depending portion G,which is adapted to enter the gunwale of the boat for a short distance, substantially as indicated in Fig. 1, said parts D being held in position by means of the ears or flanges O in any manner.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the oar-l0ck can be readily and effectively attached to the gunwale of the boat, and that the same is held rigidly in position by reason of the engagement of the depending portion of the socket member with the cavity F of the gunwale.
The parts are readily assembled and can be readily detached when desired, and by means of the seating of the socket portion of the joint in the gunwale or side of the boat great rigidity is imparted thereto, at the same time giving the requisite freedom of motion to the oar-lock, as is evident.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I solder, braze, or otherwise secure the abutting faces H of the socket members E together, rendering the socket integral and j ointless or entirely closed at all points below the top, whereby an oil-cup is formed which will retain the oil therein indefinitely, as is evident.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. An oar-lock having a ball portion depending therefrom, and socket members therefor, the same consisting of cup-shaped sectional bearings having ears attached thereto, substantially as described.
2. An oar-lock having a ball connected therewith, in combination with a socket, re ceiving the same, said ball having a neck. and said socket having a flange, which freely embraces said neck, the ball being movable in jointless, forming an oil-cup for said ball,
the socket and disconnectibie therefrom, subsubstantially as described. stantially as described.
3. An oar-lock, having a ball connected THOMAS N. ATKINSON. 5 therewith, in combination With a socket which Witnesses freely receives said ball, and prevents disconnection thereof, said socket being closed and OESARE DE ANGELIS, LOUIs V. FUGAZY.
