Patent @lrricn- WILLIAM HAGUE ALLISON,'OF MORRISBURG, CANADA.
BUOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,114, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed April 10, 1903- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HAGUE ALLI- SON, of Morrisburg, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buoys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates particularly to gasbuoys; and it has for its object to provide a special anchor connection whereby a buoy will be kept constantly in a vertical position however the velocity of the current may vary;
The invention may be said briefly to consist in furnishing the buoy with a bail fastened near the top of the body thereof, the usual anchor-chain or other ordinary anchor connection being fastened to the lower end of the buoy and said bail being, like the anchor-chain, connected to the anchor. For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which like symbols indicate the same parts, and wherein Figure l is a side elevation of a gas buoy in a current of water and provided with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Thebuoy b is in the main of ordinary construction, and other constructions than that illustrated may have my invention applied thereto to advantage. The anchor c is also of ordinary construction.
The anchor-chain d is connected at one end to the center of the under side of the'buoy and at its other end to the anchor, and it is divided near its lower end and its divided ends connected together by a swivel e. 1 connect a bailj at one end to the upperportion of the buoy and at its other end to the anchorchain just above the swivel, as at f. This bail may be connected either to a pair of rings h, secured to the top of the buoy-body, or to a pair of lugs 2', formed in one with the band 75, encircling the body of the buoy and adjustable vertically thereon. In either case the bail will be connected to the anchorchain either by a length constituting a part Serial No. 152,032. (No model.)
of that from which the bail is made or a separate length of wire rope or chain connected to the bail when the latter is required to be of greater strength.
My object in providing the movable band is to enable the point at which the bail is fastoned to be adjusted higher or lower upon the buoy, according to the speed of the current, while if a current of exceeding strength is to be buoyed I utilize both the ring-connected bail at the top of the buoy and the band connection slightly above the middle thereof. If desired, the band alone may be used with a connection therebetween and the anchor and the chain connection to the under side of the buoy and the branch connection to the top thereof dispensed with without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is as follows:
1. The combination with a buoy, an anchorfastening connected to the lower end thereof, and an auxiliary fastening leading from the top thereof to said anchor-fastening substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a buoy, an anchorfastening connected to the lower end thereof, a bail, means for fastening said bail to the upper portion of said buoy, and a length of wire rope, chain, or the like connecting said bail to the anchor-fastening, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a buoy, a movable band encircling said buoy, an anchor, and a connection between said band and said anchor, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with a buoy,an anchor, a chain leading from said anchor to the under side of said buoy, a pair of rings fastened to the top of the body of said buoy at different circumferential positions, a branched fastener connected at the ends of its branches to said rings and at its opposite end to the anchor-chain, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination with a buoy,an anchor, and a chain connecting said anchor to the under side of said buoy, of a. band encircling the In testimony whereof I have affixed my sigbody of said buoy, and having a. pair of lugs nature in presence of two witnesses.
at diametrically opposite sides thereof, a bail connected at its ends to said lugs, and a. con- WILLIAM HAGUE ALLISON V 5 necting length leading from said bail to said Witnesses:
anchor-chain, substantially as described and JOHN BUTTERWORTH MOINERY, for the purpose set forth. KATIE MCMULLEN.
