ELASTiC-TREAD HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,407, dated March 31, 1896.
Application fil d August 3, 1895. Serial No. 558,124. (No model) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR LOEFFLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Elastic-Tread Horseshoes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to certain improvements on the subject-matter of my former Letters Patent, No. 526,631, dated September 25, 1894; and the object of the present improvement is to provide a simple and eflicient means whereby the felted or other elastic pad, that is attached to the horseshoe beneath the frog of the foot, is secured in place in a readily-detachable manner, so that the pad can be replaced, when worn, in a convenient and effective manner, as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claims. I attain such object by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom view of an elastic-tread horseshoe embodying the present improvement. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sectional elevations at lines so and at 51;, respectively, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like I parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the main top plate of the horseshoe, and 2 and 3 the outer and inner verticallydepending plates or walls, the whole constituting an open-bottomed chamber 4 on the under surface of the horseshoe to receive an elastic filling of rope or equivalent material.
The inner wall 3 is cut away near the rear ends of the horseshoe so as to leave the receiving-cavities 5 for the sides of the elastic pad 6, that is usually arranged beneath the frog of the horses foot in the present type of horseshoes.
In the present improvement the rivet studs 0r prongs 7, by which the frog-pad 61s secured in place, are made detachable from the horseshoe proper in the following manner:
8 is a base-plate carrying the said rivet prongs or studs, that are integral therewith or separately secured thereto, and said plate is preferably formed of a flexible or elastic metal.
9 are overhanging retaining-lugs, formed on the under side of the top plate 1 of the horseshoe, underneath and between which the base-plate 8 has engagement by being slipped inalateral direction underneath such lugs.
are stop-lugs on the under side of the top plate 1, that are adapted to engage the edge of the plate 1, when the same is in proper position and prevent accidental disengagement of the same.
By this improved construction the elastic pad 6 is capable of removal when worn and replaced by a new pad, the disengagement being effected, when the base-plate 8 is made of flexible metal, by the bending up of the same, so that its edge will pass the stop-lug 10.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an elastic-tread horseshoe, the combination with the top plate 1, provided with overhanging lugs 9 upon its under surface, of the base-plates 8, carrying the rivet studs or prongs 7, by which the elastic frog-pad 6 is secured in place in its cavity at the rear portion of the horseshoe, substantially as set forth.
2. In an elastic-tread horseshoe, the combination with the top plate 1, provided with overhanging lugs 9 and locking-lugs 10 upon its under surface, of the base-plates 8, carrying the rivet studs or prongs 7, by which the elastic frog-pad 6 is secured in place in its cavities in the rear portion of the horseshoe, substantially as set forth.
