ELASTlC-TREAD HORSESHOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,631,dated $eptember 25, I894.

To all whom it may concern; I

Be it known that I, ARTHUR LOEFFLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to that type of horseshoes, in which the under surface of the shoe is recessed out to receive a filling of rope that constitutes in the main the wear surface of the shoe, and more particularly to such type of shoes, that carry a pad beneath the frog of the horses hoof; and the objects of the present improvement are:-to provide a simple and effective construction of the heel portion of the shoe, by which the felt pad employed beneath the frog of the foot is securely attached and held in place, as hereinafter more particularly pointed out. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a bottom view of a horseshoe constructed in accordance with the present improvement; Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same at line w-m Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a transverse section of the same at line arr-w Fig. 1.

As represented in the drawings the present improved horseshoe, will be of the general form and consists of a main top plate 1, having inner and outer

pendent side walls

2 and 3, that constitute an open bottomed chamber on the under side of the shoe, to receive a filling of rope or other equivalent material.

The outer wall 3, of the horseshoe will be of the usual corrugated or indented nature, so as to leave recesses 4, in the outer vertical wall of the shoe, the top thereof being formed by the top plate 1, which overhangs, to form roof portions 5, to such recesses and which are formed with nail holes, 6, for the passage of the nails that secure the shoe to thehorses hoof.

2 and 3, of the shoe will form a serpentine cavity or chamber for receiving and holding the rope filling, in 5 5 3, and the top plate 1, as shown, the novelty.

in this part of' my present improvement consisting in providing the top plate 1, with a pair of downwardly extending studs or prongs 7, arranged midway of the width of each rearwardly extending portion of suchplate, and

midway of the length of the pad receiving chamber, such prongsbeing adapted to be forced into a felted or other flexible pad 8, and be clinched upon the same to secure such pad in place.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Ahorseshoe having at its rear end a padreoeiving cavity formed by the outer walls 3 and the top plate 1, a pad 8 arranged in said cavity, and attaching prongs 7, arranged in pairs upon the rearwardly extending portions of the plate 1, midway of the width of such plate and midway of the length of the pad receiving chamber, substantially as set forth.
