WITNESSES TE YATE ATE I. tries,
GEORGE J. IIOOPER, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
SOFT TREAD HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,804, dated September 13, 1898 Application filed February 19, 1898. Serial No. 670,952. (No model.)
To .rcZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fu1l,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in horseshoes of the class known as soft-tread, and its object is to provide a simple and improved construction of horseshoe of this type in which the treadpad is held firmly and securely in position,
but is adapted to be readily and conveniently applied and removed without the necessity of detaching the shoe.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a bottom perspective view of a horseshoe constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of same.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings,A designates the shoe proper, which is provided in its lower face with a continuous channel or groove 13, following the contour thereof, the side walls of said channel being formed with longitudinal grooves 11 and transverse rivet-passages, and the body portion 0, constituting the upper face of the shoe, with nail-holes cl.
A cushion pad or plate E, of the same shape as the shoe and made of rubber or some other suitable elastic orseini-elastic material,is seated in the channel of the shoe and forms the tread portion thereof. This pad is provided on opposite sides of its quarters with tongues or flanges f, which project into the grooves b, and with transverse passages for the recep tion of rivets g, which extend through said passages and the passages hereinbefore mentioned in the side walls of the channel B of the shoe, whereby said pad is firmly secured in position against accidental displacement and yet may be conveniently removed, upon withdrawing the rivets, without detaching the shoe from the horses hoof. The pad being flexible the tongues are adapted to be readily engaged with and disengaged from the grooves when the pad is inserted and removed. Vertical curved slots h are formed in the quarters of the pad and are arranged in line with the nail-openings d of the shoe, so that the latter may be nailed to the hoof after the pad has been riveted thereto.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
A soft-tread horseshoe comprising in its con struction a shoe proper provided in its lower face with a continuous channel corresponding to the shape of the shoe and with nail-holes and grooves in the inner and outer side walls of the channel, a horseshoe-shaped cushion or tread pad seated in said channel and provided with side'flanges or tongues engaging said grooves and slots arranged in alinement with the nail-holes and also with transversely-extending passages, and rivets passing through the wallsof the channel and the passages of the pad and securing the latter in position, substantially asdescribed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

B. N. SMITH.
