CORSET.

P SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,379, dated March 31, 1896.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS S. GILBERT, of New IIaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in that class of corsets having their front portions specially-fitted and cut away, and provided with specially fitted auxiliary sections which occupy the spaces or openings thus formed, the object being to produce a simple, durable, and effective corset constructed with particular reference to the Superior tting of the figure, permanence of shape, and strength at the waist-line.

IVith these ends in View my invention consist-s in a corset having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention the lower edge of the front A of the corset is cut away from the side steel B to the busk C to form an opening D, the upper edge of which inclines downward from rear to front. The space thus formed is filled in by an auxiliary section E, the ends of which are connected with the adjacent portions of the corset. The lower edge of the auxiliary section forms a part of the lower outline of the corset, while its upper edge extends upward under the front of the corset, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A ligament F is employed to connect the upper edge of the auxiliary section with the lower edge of the front section, as shown in Fig. 2. This ligament preserves the virtual continuity of the front portion of the corset, but does not interfere with the iiexure thereof. By preference the ligament will be of double thickness and reinforced by bones G, as shown in Fig. 2.

By constructing a corset in accordance with my invention I am enabled to specially iit the upper portion of the front of the corset to the bust portion of the figure and to specially t the said auxiliary section to the hip portion of the iigure, securing in each instance a much better fit to the figure than can be obtained when the whole front of the corset is made integral, for then the iitting of the upper portion thereof is hampered by the fitting of the lower portion thereof, and vice versa. Furthermore, a corset constructed in accordance with my invention is of superior strength along the waist-line, where all corsets give way and break down before elsewhere. Moreover, by employing the ligament the corset is markedly reinforced and prevented from being drawn out of shape and distorted.

It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes in the construction shown and described may be made, and I would have it understood that I do not limit and alterations as fairly fall within the spiritA and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The herein-described corset having the lower portion of its front cut away, an auxiliary section secured at its ends to the corset, and having its upper edge extended upward under the said front portion, and a ligament connecting the upper edge of the said auxiliary section and the lower edge of the said cut-away front, substantially as described.

2. The herein-described corset, having the lower portion of its front cut away, an auxiliary section located in the said opening, attached at its ends to the corset, and having its upper edge extended upward under the front of the same, and a corded or reinforced ligament connecting the lower edge of the front of the corset with the underlapped upper edge of the auxiliary section, substantially as described.
