DRESS-STAY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,930, dated March 24, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J ULIUS J ANOWITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inDresstays, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This improvement relates more particularly to that class of stays which have a coated metal core; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction hereinafter more particularly described and then definitely claimed at the end hereof.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a stay constructed according to my improvement with part broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 00 m on Fig. 1. Both of these figures are on an enlarged scale the better to show the construction.

Referring to the details of the drawings by figures, 1 2 represent steel cores coated with a hard resilient compound 3, preferably hardrubber compound, as in my Patent No. 512,113. One end of both of these cores is tapered off, as shown, and the coating is also tapered 01f, so that this end of the stay is much more flexible and thinner than the body thereof. The other end of the stay is tapered off at one side, and to enable this to be done the core 1 is much shorter than the other, as shown in Fig. 1.

A stay thus made will be found to have great advantages over stays as usually made, for while its body is comparatively stiff the end having the tapered core will be found to be very pliable and thus adapted to be used around the bust in front, or in fact any part of the dress where it is required that the dress shall be soft and yielding. The other end is tapered on the side to admit of its being set down in the extreme corners of the waist in front. Besides this adaptability of fitting into a narrow corner it will be seen that this end is also more pliable than the body, inasmuch as there is but one steel core for a portion of its length.

It has heretofore been the practice to use whalebone where it was necessary to have extra pliability or to set in the corners in front, because whalebone could be shaved and cut as desired, but whalebone is now so expensive that dressmakers avoid its use wherever possible, and my improvement Will therefore be found to be of much use and a great saving to dressmakers and wearers.

hat I claim as new is- 1. A stay having a metallic core tapering in thickness toward the end and covered with an impervious coating also tapering toward the end, substantially as described.

2. A coated duplex stay having one of the cores shorter than the other, and the coating tapered off at one edge, substantially as described.

3. A coated duplex stay having cores of different lengths arranged side by side, andboth the cores and coating tapered toward one end, and the coating at its other end tapered off at one edge, substantially as shown and described.
