JAMES F. OOOIIRAN, OF NORTH LIBERTY, OIIIO.
ADJUSTA BLE PLOW-CLEVIS.
SFEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,401, dated March 17', 1896.
Application filed May 20, 1895. Serial No. 549,934. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES F. COOHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Liberty, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Plow-Clevises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in plows, and has for its object the production of simple and improved mechanism whereby a plow-clevis may be readily and easily adjusted and held at any desired angle with relation to the plowbeam. This object I accomplish by securing to the forward end of the plow-beam a casting in which is pivot-ally mounted a curved lever which is designed to have pivotal con nection at its forward end with said clevis, which latter at its rear end is pivoted to said plow-beam. A11 operating arm or lever is pivoted at the rear end of said plow-beam and is connected to said curved lever by a suitable connecting-rod.
The invention comprises the details of construction, and also the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a plow-beam, which is of any ordinary or pre ferred construction. A clevis a is pivoted at a to the forward end of said plow-beam, said clevis being provided with a cross-bar a on which are formed two upwardly-projecting lugs or ears a Bis a casting having a flat rearward extension 17, which is secured in any suitable manner to the under side of the plow-beam A, an enlarged rectangular head I) of said casting being designed to rest against the forward end of said plow-beam and extends up between the parallel arms a of the clevis a. This head Z) is composed of two parallel side pieces or ears b and a rear web or connecting wall 22 said connecting web or wall being formed integral with said side pieces.
C is a curved lever, which is pivoted on a cross-pin b supported by the side pieces 19 said lever being connected at its outer end to a pin 6 mounted in the lugs a of the clevis. The pin 11 is passed through a curved slot 1) in the lever C, said slot serving to allow of the vertical movement or adjustment of the clevis.
On the rear end of the plow-beam A is secured a frame cl, which has its upper portion formed into a curved bar d, provided with teeth 61 in its periphery. In the frame (I is pivoted an operating-lever D, which is connected to the curved lever O by a connectingrod d whereby the position of the said lever C may be regulated by the adjustment of lever D. A locking-lever d is pivoted to the lever D and is provided at its lower end with a pawl (1 which is designed to engage the teeth (1 of frame (I.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown means for ap-' plying my invention to a clevis of ordinary construction. In this form the cross-bar e of a clevis E of ordinary form is provided with a hole or opening 6, through which is designed to be passed a rod or bolt 6 formed integral with a casting e which is provided With two upwardly-projecting lugs or ears 6 between which the slotted ends of the curved lever O is designed to be secured. A nut a working on rod or bolt 6 serves to secure said casting firmly in position.
The operation of my invention is apparent, and it will be seen that by means of the mechanism herein described the angle of the clevis may be readily and easily changed or adjusted at will and held in any desired position I claim as my invention 1. The combination with a plow-beam, of a clevis pivoted to the forward end thereof, ears or lugs projecting from said clevis, a casting secured on the forward end of said plow-beam, a curved lever pivotally supported by said casting and pivotally connected at its forward end to the ears or lugs of said clevis, and an operating-rod connected to said lever, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a plow-beam, of a clevis pivotally secured to the forward end thereof, ears or lugs projecting from said clevis, a casting secured 011 the forward end of said plow-beam, a curved lever pivotally supported by said casting and having a curved slot in its forward end, a pin or bolt passed through said slot and the ears or lugs of said clevis, and an operating-rod connected to said lever, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a plow-beam, of a clevis pivotally secured to the forward end thereof, ears or lugs projecting from said clevis, a casting secured on the forward end of said plow-beam, said casting being provided with parallel side portions or cars, a curved lever pivotally supported by said side portions or cars and provided with a curved slot in its forward end, a pin or bolt passed through said slot and the ears or lugs of said clevis, and an operating-rod connected to said lever, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a plow-beam, of a clevis pivotally secured to the forward end thereof, ears or lugs projecting from said clevis, a casting having a fiat rearward extension secured to the forward end of said plow-beam, said casting being also provided with parallel side portions or ears, a curved lever pivotally supported by said side portions or cars and provided with a curved slot in its forward end, a pin or bolt passed through said slot and the cars or lugs of said clevis, and means for operating said lever, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a plow-beam, of a clevis pivotally secured to the forward end thereof, ears or lugs projecting from said clevis, a casting having a flat rearward extension secured to the forward end of said plow-beam, said casting being also provided with parallel side portions or ears, a curved lever pivotally supported by said side portions or ears and provided with a curved slot in its forward end, a pin or bolt passed through said slot and the ears or lugs of said clevis, an operating-lever pivoted to said plow-beam, means for holding the same locked into position, and connections between said operating-lever and said curved lever, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a plow-beam, of a clevis pivotally secured to the forward end thereof, ears or lugs projecting from said clevis, a casting having a fiat rearward extension secured to the forward end of said plow-bea1n, said casting being also provided with parallel side portions or cars, a curved lever pivotally supported by said side portions or ears and provided with a curved slot in its forward end, a pin or bolt passed through said slot and the ears or lugs of said clevis, a supporting-frame mounted on the rear end of said plow-beam and having a rack-bar formed on its upper portion, an operatinglever pivoted to said frame, a connecting-rod connecting said operating lever with said curved lever, and a locking-lever pivoted on said operating-lever and adapted toengagc said rack-bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
