B. DIM'ITY.
WEED GUTTER.
Patented oet. 29, 1895.
@9i/kwam@ 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENGELHARD DIMITY, OF CLAY CENTER, KANSAS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,972, dated October 29, 1895.
Application led .Tune 1,1894. Serial No. 513,148. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ENGELHARD DIMITY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clay Center, in the county of Clay and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Cultivators and Weed-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in weed-cutters for listedcorn, wherein the weed-cutter is mounted upon a carriage and manipulated by means of levers, and the 0bjects are to provide an eective weed-cutter, easily operated, simple, and durable. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a rear elevation of my invention when, used as a weed-cutter; Fig. 2, a side elevation of same.
Similar letters and figures of reference indicate like parts throughout both the views.
Slotted castings A, supporting cross-beam B, axles s, tongue y, braces v, v', and w, and cross-trees, constitute the framework of the carriage, supported by wheels t. Rocking cross-head m is journaled in the rear ends ot' the lower sections a of the compound levers fj a, having fulcrums Z in the forward prolower ends of said sheths. Bolts e, passing through the upperends of said sheths and through theslots in said studs, serve to stead y said knives, vand by tightening the nuts thereon to rigidly secure said sheths in whatever position to which they may be adjusted. Said cross-head is rocked by means of lever b, held in position by ratchet 10, and connected by rod 0 with curved arm n, which is firmly secured to said cross-head by bolts 2. Either end of said cross-head is raised or lowered by means of its respective lever fj a., held in position by ratchet h. Draft-equalizers q, the upper ends of each being secured to crosstree e', and each provided with singletree c, are connected at their lower ends to said crosshead by means of draft-chains g, attached tol II claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a weed-cutter and the rocking-crosshead j ournaled in the lower arm of the slotted casting pivoted to the crank-arm on each side of said machine, whereby said crosshead is raised and lowered, and rocked by means of the lever attached tothe arm rigidly secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a weed-cutter provided with a rocking cross-head, the studsecured thereto and having the curved, crosswise slot for the lateral adjustment of the knife, the sheth se'- eured to said stud by a cupjoint and provided with a bolt in its upper end passing through said slot for holding said sheth in whatever .position to which it may be laterally adj usted,
substantially as shown and described.
, vIn testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
t ENGELHARD DIMITY.
