SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,334, dated March 1'?, 1896.

Application filed March 23, 1894. Serial No. 504,881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MoRroN E. CONVERSE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Vinchendon, Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to folding beds, and the object is to provide a bed that may be folded up and packed away in small compass.

My invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as hereinaf-l ter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all figures.

Figure l represents a side elevation of a bedstead embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof when folded. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.

The bottom frame of the bed comprises the side bars, D, and the end bars, D', secured together in any desired manner. The end bars, D', or extension d thereon are provided with trunnions CW, adapted to engage in sockets d2, formed in portions of the head and foot boards D. It will be seen by this construction that the head and footboards may be folded closely upon the bottom frame, as indicated in Fig. 2.

It will be seen that the head and foot boards are extended downward to form legs for the The ends of the side boards form abutments for the head and foot boards when the same are in a vertical position, and these head and foot boards may be locked in this vertical position relatively to the side bars by means of the removable side boards, D2, the ends of which bear against the inner surface of the head and foot boards.

To hold the side boards in position, l provide their lower edges with pins d3 adapted to engage in sockets d4 in the side bars, D. These side bars hold the bedstead in a rigid open position, and When it is desired to fold the bedstead of course the side bars must be removed.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A folding bed comprising a bottom frame having side and end bars rigidly secured together, a head-board having sockets formed in the inner side of its posts, an extensionpiece on thehead end of the bottom frame having trunnions to enter the sockets, a footboard having sockets in its posts, an extension-piece on the foot end of the bottom frame, an extension-piece on said foot end having trunnions to engage in the sockets of the footboard, and side boards having pins to enter holes in the side bars of the bottom frame, the said side being Wholly removable, and, when in position, adapted to support the head and foot boards vertically, substantially as speci-y lied.
