LIQUID-FILTERING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,821, dated March 3, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ARVIS LAMSON, .Ir, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Filtering Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved filtering device for liquids; and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section on the line 2 2 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section on the line 3 3 shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: represents a detail vertical section of the filtering-cone.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a tunnel A, having a discharge-pipe B in its lower end, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper end of the tunnel A has an expanded flaring or trumpet-shaped mouth (I, as shown in Fig. 2. Below said flaring mouth G the tunnel has on its inside an annular groove D for a purpose as will hereinafter be described. In
connection with said tunnel I use a molded filteringcone E, preferably made of felt, having its upper end expanded, flaring or trumpet-shaped, as shown at F, and adapted to fit into the correspondingly-shaped flaring tunnel-mouth C, so as to prevent the liquid when poured into the filtering-cone E from leaking into the space between it and the tunnel.
Below the expanded mouth F of the filtering-cone is molded an annular projection G, adapted to fit into the annular groove D of the tunnel, as shown.
On the interior of the cone E, opposite to its annular projection G, is made an annular groove I'I, adapted to receive a slitted expansive spring I, as shown, which serves the purpose of temporarily securing the upper end of the filtering-cone within the upper end of the tunnel. By this arrangement I provide a ready means for suspending a felt or other fi1tering-cone in a tunnel in such a manner as to leave a free annular space K between the said cone and tunnel, as shown in Fig. 2, thus giving to the cone E a very large filterin gen rface as compared with devices in which the said filtering cone is held more or less in contact with the inner surface of the tunnel.
To fasten the filtering-cone into the tunnel all that is necessary to do is to place it in position, as shown in Fig. 2, with the molded mouth portion F fitting the tunnel-mouth G and with the annular projection G fitting into the internal annular groove D, after which the slitted expansive spring I is placed in the internal annular groove II on the inte rior of the filtering-cone, causing it to be expanded against the interior of the groove D, and thus held firmly secured in its upper end to the upper portion of the tunnel.
To remove the filtering-cone in case it should become foul or impure, or for other reasons, all that is necessary to do is to detach the expansive spring I from within the upper grooved portion of the filtering-cone, when the latter may easily be withdrawn from the tunnel. The cone may thus easily be removed and cleansed from time to time, as maybe found necessary.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is-- The herein-described filtering device, consisting of a tunnel A, having its upper end expanded or flared outward and an annular groove arranged at the base of said expanded end, a molded filtering-cone fitting within and having its upper end formed into a shape cor responding with that of the upper end of the tunnel, the groove of said tunnel receiving an annular rib formed on the cone, and a spring-ring adapted to hold the cone in contact with the tunnel, substantially as described.
