FENCE- SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,61 '7, dated March 3, 1896. Application filed June 7, 1895 Serial No. 551,959. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'we, JOSEPH R. Porrs and HARRY M. BARE, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Mechanicsburg, in" the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The obj eot of this invention is the production of an adjustable iron post for fences, railings, and the like which shall possess advantages in points of simplicity, efficiency, and durability.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of our improved post and base-yoke. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the base-head, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the same.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the base-yoke which is formed of flat bar-iron or soft steel. The free ends of this yoke extend upwardly, and the base-head 2 is secured thereto in a -manner to be hereinafter explained. This post and its brace, respectively. The post 5 is slidable in the recess 3 and the brace 6 is adjustable in the recess 4., and by this means the height of the post may be varied to compensate for the settling of the earth around the base, which always occurs when a post is first set. The recesses in the end of the head should be of less depth than the width of the post and brace, as illustrated in Fig. 1, that the ends of the base-yoke may securely bind against them to insure a positive engagement when'it is held by the bolts 7.
The manner in which the adjustment is accomplished, as well as the advantages, 850., will be understood from the foregoing description, and it is particularly noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction, as well as the proportions, without in any manner departing from the spirit of our invention.

In a fence-post the combination with the yoke having upturned ends, a base-head having end recesses, a post and its brace slidable in the recesses and a bolt clamping the head,
