IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE FENCES.A
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,246, dated August 26, 1873; application filed August 8, 1873.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that We, GEO. LAKINS, of'East Norwalk, Huron county, Ohio, and LESTER NI LAKIN'S, of Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to improvements in Wire fences; and consists of devices whichl will be hereafter fully described and claimed.
rIJhe accompanying drawings represent a felice with our improvements.
The flanged posts are represented at c. These have Wedge-shaped holes 2, through which the wires pass. A key, 3, presses the wires into the small part of the hole, and thus prevents the wire from slipping. The corner or end post is provided with a brace, c, the
upper end of which has a notch resting in another notch in the iiange of the post. The lower end of the brace rests upon a stone, e, or in a groove in the stone or bed-piece. It
is provided with an adjustable rod and nut, g. This brace eounteracts the strain of the Wires, thus holding the post in an upright position. A. rail is placed upon the top of the fence, a groove being cut in its under Aside,'so that it will ride the top wire. This rail@ may be fastened to the ianged post by a bolt. The upper ends oi' the stays are split, and then clinched down upon the ends of the rails, as seen at 5, and a bolt, pin, or nail may be put int-o the rail and clinched also, a strip of band-iron may be tacked on top of the rails to hold the joint and keep it dry.
If extra strength is desired, two top wires may be used, being placed at equal height and on opposite sides of the 4ianged posts and stays.
Having thus described our invention, we claiml. The combination of the post a, the brace c, adjustable rod g, and stone c, substantially as shown and described.
2. The stays 4, split at top, as Shown at 5, and bent in opposite directions to clinch the grooved ends of the cap-rail, substantially as Shown and specified.
