SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,427, dated February 25, 1896.

Application tiled August 28, 1895. Serial No. 560,728. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FRANK VICTOR BURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elko, in the county of Elko and State of Nevada,

`have invented certain new and useful Im- This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gates of that class which are designed to be operated by meansVV of levers and cords or other connections, and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap construction whereby the gate is rendered more easy to operate, the parts are not liable to get out of order, and provision is made for holding the gate yieldingly at the center or midway between its two open positions. I also provide means for pre'- venting the gates being opened too far.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be speciiically deiined by the appended claims.

The invention in this instance resides in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fullyhereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims. y

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cross-piece on the gate-post and the spring carried thereby.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both of the views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by lettter, A designates the gate which may be of any well-known style provided with a latch B pivoted at Z9 and adapted to engage a catch C on the gate-post C in the usual manner. The latch may be of wood or it may be a spring-latch, as may be found most desirable. Dis the gatestile, and E the fence or hinge post, to which the gate-post is hinged at a point near the vertical center of the gatein any suitable manner.

F is a lever, of wood or metal, pivotally mounted on the fence or hinge post and connected at one end with the upper end of the gate-stile, as shown in Fig. l. Around the bolt that secures the end of the lever to the gate-post is a spring G, which aids in holding the gate to the center, as shown in Fig. l.

H is a cross-piece secured to the face of the fence or hinge post, as shown, and upon the upper face of this cross-piece is a spring-plate I, which has a depressioni at its center where it is secured to said cross-piece, its ends being free and being humped or arched between the ends and the depression, as shown. This spring helps to hold the gate to the center, so it will not pass beyond the center should it be pulled too hard.

K are Wires or cords connected with the lever F, as shown, and leading to the operatinglevers L on the posts M, passing preferably over pulleys N, as shown. The cross-piece H serves to prevent the gate going open too far.

The operation is simple and will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and a further detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.

What is claimed as new isl. The combination with the gate and the pivoted lever for operating the same, of the spring around the bolt that connects said lever with the gate-post, and the spring-plate on the top of the hinge-post substantially' as and for the purpose specied.

2. The combination with the gate and the hinge-post, of a cross-piece on the hinge-post, a spring on said cross-piece having a depression at its center, and the lever F substantially as and for the purpose speciied.

3. The combination with the gate, the latchpost, the latch and the catch, of the lever pivoted on the hinge-post and connected with the gate-post, the wires connected with said lever, the operating-levers connected With said wires, the cross-piece. on the hinge-post, and the spring on said cross-piece and'adapted to serve substantially as herein specified.
