CAST-OPP FORSUSPENDERS.
No. 555,004. Patented Feb, 18, 1896 UNITE STATES ZATENT FFIE.
CHARLES R. HARRIS AND IVILLIAM FREEMAN, OF \VILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAST-OFF FOR SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,004, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed July 3, 1895. Serial No. 554,873. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, OHARLEs R. HARRIS and WILLIAM FREEMAN, residents of Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cast-Offs for Suspenders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in cast-offs for suspenders, the object being to provide a device for detachably connecting together two parts of a suspender, whereby the portion buttoned to the trousers may be quickly and easily cast off when desired and as readily connected together again; and it consists in a device having the general shape and appearance of an ordinary safetypin with some additional features namely, a thumb and finger hold at the open endby which the bars forming the cast-off are sprung together in opening and unfastening it; and it further consists in the bends or lateral enlargements on one of the bars, whereby an extended bearing is formed, the function of which is to prevent the cast-off from turning or rocking, so that a certain part of it is always uppermost or in the proper operative position.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View showing our improved cast-off in position uniting two parts of a suspender. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the cast-off, and Fig. 3 is a View of a modification.
A A represent the two bars of the cast-off. These bars are connected together or integral at one end,'1, and are parallel when together or in their normal position.
The bar A is provided with a hook 2 at one end arranged to engage and fasten the other bar, A. Adjacent to this hook the metal of the suspenders, and this end constitutes a thumb or finger piece adapted to be grasped.
To increase and extend the bearing of the bar A in the part which it connects, the metal forming it is preferably bent outward at G in the same plane with the rest of the castofi, and when in position the stitching follows this part around, as shown in Fig. 1, the object being to prevent the cast-off from turning or rocking in its place, it being desirable to always have the cast-01f maintain the position shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in the different figures of the drawings, the end 4 may be bent slightly upward or it may extend out straight, as in Fig.
3, and instead of the single lateral bend 6 two may be made in bar A, as at 7 7 in Fig. 3. In its position in a suspender the thumb and finger pieces 3 and 4 always extend forward and the hooks 2 preferably open outward, as this arrangement affords the greatest facility in the casting off or opening of the suspenders.
Figs. 1 and 3 show the cast-off closed, and Fig. 2 shows it open. WVhen closed and in place, the parts B and C of the suspender are held together. When opened, the part B will readily slip out of the cast-off.
It is evident that other slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described in addition to those mentioned without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an article of manufacture, a oast-off comprising two longitudinal bars, and two end bars for connecting these longitudinal bars and confining the web held by the cast-off bespecification in the presence of two subscribtween them, a finger-piece formed on each of ing witnesses.
these longitudinal bars at a point outside of CHARLES R. HARRIS. or beyond the adjacent end bar and a hook \VILLIAM FREEMAN. for detachably holding these bars together, \Vitnesses: substantially as set forth. R. O. MoNTELIUs,
In testimony whereof '0 have signed this II. \V. SILVERMANN.
