Description

M. T. HOSMER; v WRAPPER 0R HOLDER FOR APPAREL.
Patented Feb 18, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARIAN T. HOSMER, OF WVOBURN, MASSACHUSETTS.
WRAPPER OR HOLDER FOR APPAREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,876, dated February 18, 1896.
I Application filed April 10, 1893. Renewed January 13, 1896. Serial No. 575,392. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIAN T. HOSMER, of Woburn, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Wrappers or Holders for Apparel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to means for securing dresses and'other articles of apparel and materials in properly-folded position in a trunk or other place to protect the said materials or articles of apparel against being wrinkled, jammed or mussed in course of handling or transportation.
It is well known that however well articles of apparel, and particularly ladies dresses and the like, may be packed in a trunk the same are quite liable, owing to the rough usage to which the trunk is subjected by baggage-handlers and express-men, to become jammed and wrinkled and rendered unusable without being re-pressed or done up.
It is the purpose of this invention to provide an envelope or wrapper for folded articles of apparel which will maintain the same in place in a trunk or chest and prevent the goods from being jammed endwise of their inclosure, all as I will now proceed to describe in detail, and point out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the annexed drawin gs, and to the letters marked thereon, formin g a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package or lot of apparel secured by my improved wrapper or envelope. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my improved wrapper or envelope in opened position, a portion being represented as torn or broken away to more clearly portray its structure.
In carrying out my invention I provide two covering members a and b, which should be sufficiently stifi to maintain articles of apparel c-such as ladies dresses, wraps, &c.- which may be folded and placed therebetween. These members may be composed of any suitable material. As herein shown, they consist of wire frames (I covered with cloth, or it may be leather or similar material e. The
covering of the frames 01. The said strip f may serve to cover the rear edge of the pile or package of material or apparel c placed between the covering members, and the flaps g operate to cover and protect the front edges of the pile of material, as is clearly shown in. Fig. 1.
h designates pockets formed across the covering members, through which tapes or drawstrings i are arranged, so that they may draw together the covering members and be tied over the flaps gin front of the package, as shown at j in the last-mentioned figure.
With this invention apparel, such as dresses, wraps, &c., may be properly folded and placed between the covering members a b and the draw-strings or tapes 11 drawn therearound and tied, and the package thus formed placed and packed in a trunk or chest without danger of jamming or wrinkling the goods in course of handling or transportation of such trunk or chest, as is liable to be the case where the goods are not so covered and protected. V
In the ordinary manner of packing a trunk there is great liability of the goods therein being jammed from end to end of their inclosure by the rough usage to which the trunk is subjected by baggage-men, the said trunk being frequently turned end over end and thrown and tossed about so as to strike upon the ends. By my improvements these obj ections are overcome, and the articles of ap parel between the holders or covers are preserved in their properly-folded forms.
It is obvious that the material connecting the rear edges of the covers or frames may be separated and the tapes or draw-strings tied at this point, as well as in front, without departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that what is claimed is 1. A Wrapper and holder for apparel comprising in its construction two stiff covering members having flexible flaps and transversely-extending pockets and tapes or drawstrings movably'arranged in said pockets and i adapted to be carried around the holder and to be drawn over the edges of the stiff members and their ends suitably united.
2. A Wrapper and holder for apparel colnprising in its construction two stiif covering members, a flexible strip connecting the rear edges of the said members, flaps connected T March, A. D. 1893.
