7 E. L. MOON.
TAILORS MEASURE.
No. 554,710. Patented Feb. 18, 1896.
' INVENTOR v of less flexibility than the tape a.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. MOON, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
TAILO RS M EAS U RE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,710, dated February 18, 1896. Application filed July 1,1895. Serial No. 554,523. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. MOON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tape-Measures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of tape-measures of that class which are particularly adapted for use by tailors in taking measurements for clothing.
The objects of my invention are to combine with an ordinary form of flexible tape-measure a detachable handpiece or tab of such construction and outline as to facilitate the retention of the end of the tape in proper position for securing the inseam-measure of pantaloons and to produce other improvements in details of construction which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a portion of a flexible measuring-tape having my improvement connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a central-vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
a represents a portion of the ordinary form of flexible tape-measure, said tape being provided at a point near its outer end with a button b, the latter having a rounded attachingshank b which projects through said tape and from the rear side thereof, as shown.
0 represents a finger-piece or tab which is formed of leather or other suitable material This fingerpiece is, as shown in the drawings, substantially of an elongated shield shape and the upper and wider flaring end of which has its upper edge concave or inwardly curved, as indicated at cl. In the construction of this tab 0 I secure therein at a central point in its upper and wider portion and a short distance below the curved edge d a button socketpiece 6, the latter being adapted, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to detachably receive the attaching-shank b of the tape-button b.
The socket-piece e is so located in the tab or finger-piece c as to result when the latter is connected with the tape, as described, in the outer end of said tape being brought flush with the center of the curved edge cl of said tab.
In utilizing this invention the narrower portion of the tab 0 may be grasped by the hand and held in such position as to cause the curved upper edge 01 of the tab to fit in the crotch of the pantaloons and allow the flexible-tape to drop down against the inner side of the leg. In this manner it will be seen that the upper end of the tape will be held exactly at the junction of the pantaloons-legs and that the correct inseam-measurement may thus be properly attained. When the tape is being used for other measurements which do not require the employment of the tab 0, it is evident that said tape and tab may be readily disconnected.
From the construction and arrangement of parts which I have described it will readily be seen that an improved tape-measure of the character described maybe produced at a low expense and that the same will be of great utility in the production of the inseam-measurements.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a tape-measure for tailors use the combination with the flexible tape a and a button connected therewith at a point near the outer end of said tape, said button having a projecting attaching-shank, of a substantially shield-shaped, tab 0 of less flexible material than said tape, said tab having its outer and wider end portion provided with an inwardlycurved edge cl and a button socket-piece e secured in said tab at a distance from the cen ter of said curved edge equal to the distance between the point of attachment of the button b and the outer end of said flexible tape, said button socket-piece being adapted to detachably receive the shank of said tape-but ton, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
EDWIN L. MOON. In presence of O. M. VOORI-IEES, A. L. PHELPS.
