.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARTIN F. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States,residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmgs.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in scissors attachments for cutting hair.

My invention consists of a detach able sleeve adapted to receive within it the blades of scissors, to be readily connected with the scissors, and having comb-like teeth, which lie at the side of the blades and act as guards to guide and limit the length of out of the blades, to render the cutting of hair easier and to be done by persons of less experience than barbers;

In the accompanying drawings, on which like reference-letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a plan view of a pair of scissors with my attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a detached plan view of the attachment; Fig. 4, a cross-sectional view on the line 09 a: of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a detached plan view of a modified form of my attachment, and Fig. 6 a similar view of the same form with the parts differently adjusted.

At A is designated a pair of scissors of the ordinary or any approved type. I construct of metal, vulcanized rubber, or other suitable material a tapering sleeve B, flattened on the top and rounded on the edges and adapted to receive lengthwise within it the blades O of the scissors. Preferably at one corner of the sleeve I attach a wire connector D, adapted at one end to be coiled about a part of the handle, as seen at E. The place the sleeve shall occupy on the blades is adjusted in applying the attachment by drawing the holder D to the proper place and then twisting or coiling the free end about the scissors-handle, the wire being soft. At one side of the sleeve and from the larger and outer end thereof I provide it with prongs or comb-like teeth F,

somewhat rounding at their points, so as to readily pass through the hair without scratching the skull. The upper and lower faces of the teeth I preferably flatten. The preferred manner of constructing the teeth is by having them fashioned after the manner of a comb with a connecting bar or head G, and then to rivet or otherwise attach this head to the sleeve. I have shown rivets at H as one form of fastening.

The device is more cheaply constructed by making the sleeve and teeth separate, as this avoids the use of dies or special machinery, since the sleeve is readily made by folding over a plate of sheet metal into the desired form, as more clearly seen in Fig. 4. Then the teeth with their connecting bar or head G can be obtained from comb factories, and may be either metal, vulcanized rubber, celluloid, or other material.

Another advantage of making the teeth separate from the sleeve and attaching them is shown by the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, wherein the head G is provided with an extra set of teeth I, besides the set F. In this form also a single rivet is used and adapted to form a pivot, as shown at H, so that the teeth or comb can be swung around to bring either the teeth F or the teeth I under the blades. For preliminary cutting the teeth F are used; but for trimming the hair in the final operation for making it smoother, and in cutting it around the ears and the edges, the teeth I are preferred, as they stand crosswise to the blade and enable the operator to more readily take up the hair where it is short.

This device I have made and used in a practical manner, so that the statements herein made as to its utility and operation are based upon actual experience.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described scissors attachment for hair-cutting, the same consisting of a taper- 5 mg sleeve adapted to receive within it the scissors-blades and to be connected with the scissors, and having pivoted thereto a double set of comb-like teeth, one set running in one direction and the other in another.
