SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,324, dated February 11, 1896.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMANDA M. UNGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 0amton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DishlVashing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the dish-washing cage. Fig. at is a detached View of the splash-ring. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the cover. Fig. (i is a detached View of the spring and its disk. Fig. 7 is a detached view of the detachable partition Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. 1

The present invention has relation to disl washing machines; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the acconnpanying drawings, A represents the body of the washer proper, which is substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and is preferably formed of sheet metal and of any desired size, reference being had to the size of the machine designed to be constructed.

For the purpose of reducing the quantity of water the bottom or lower portion of the body A is tapered, as illustrated in the drawings; but it will be understood that the body may be formed straight, or substantially so, throughout its entire length without departing from the nature of my invention; but I prefer to form the body as shown for the purpose above stated. The dish-cage B is substantially of the form shown, and is formed of a size to correspond with the size of the body A, reference being had to the proper working of the dishcagc. The cage B is,provided with the handles a, which are located substantially as shown in the drawings,and,as shown,they are extended upward through the curved slots b,which slots are formed in the cover C. The cover 0 is formed so as to properly fit the top or the upper end of the body A, and also cover the top or upper end of the splash-ring D. The splashring D is placed in the upper portion of the body Aand held in proper position bymeans of the flange c, which flange is formed upon the upper end of the body A.

Below the cage B, and Within the bottom or lower portion of the body A, is located the spring E, which spring is attached at its bottom or lower end to the bottom of the bodyA, substantially as shown in Fig.

The top or upper end of the spring is provided with the disk F, which disk is for the purpose of engaging the bottom of the cage B.

In use the cage B is filled with the dishes designed to be washed, after which said cage is placed in the bodyA and upon the disk F, after which the cover 0 is placed in proper position and secured by means of the hooks cl and the eyes cl, or other equivalents, it being understood that the desired amount of water and soap is to be placed in the bodyA before, the cover 0 is placedinposition.

For the purpose of holding the dishes against displacement, or, in other words, better confining the dishes, the partition G may be employed and is placed in the cage B before the dishes designed to be washed areplaced in the cage.

For the purpose of properly holding the cage B upon the disk F the extension f is provided, which extension is inserted through the aperture g.

In use the handles a, are pressed downward, thereby compressing the spring E as the cage is lowered. After the cage has been lowered the desired distance the handles are released and the cage forced upward by the reaction of the spring, thereby imparting a reciprocating motion to the cage.

If desired, a partial rotating movement may be given to the cage tothe extent of the length of the curved slots 1), which movement may be imparted at any desired elevation of the cage.

IIaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a dish-washing machine the combination of the receptacle A, having located in the bottom or lower portion thereto, a spring, the

cage B, provided with handles extended above the cage, the cover 0, detachably connected to the body and provided with the curved slots 1), through which the handles extend, and the splash-ring D, located within the top or up per portion of the body A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a dish-washing machine the -co1nbination of a receptacle having connected thereto the splash-ring D, the cage B, provided with handles, the spring E, provided with the disk F, the extended portion f, and the aperture g,

formed in the bottom or lower end of thecage and the cover 0, provided with grooved slots through which the handles extend all arranged, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
