TUMBLER-WASHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,422, dated October 18, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN M. GUNN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Find lay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful tive position inside of a tub, one side of the.

This invention relates to devices for washing tumblers,'cups, and similar hollow utensils; and it consists in the labor-saving device, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the fiat base of my device, which is made of cast-iron or other suitable metal, preferably of circular shape and with a rounded edge a. This base is cast with a socket B near one side, into which is fitted, removably, a post O of suitable height. Upon the upper end of this post is placed a sponge D, which is held in place by a cord E, passed through the body of the sponge and through apertures F, bored transversely through the top of the post. The sponge may be removed, when desired, by cutting the fastening-cord E, removing the old sponge, replacing it by a new and clean one, and then fastening this in the same manner.

The use of this device is illustrated in Fig. 2, from which it will be seen that it is placed in a pail, tub, or other suitable vessel of sufficient size, which is then filled with water until the lower half part of the sponge is covered. The tumbler, cup, or other hollow article to be cleansed is then reversed or inverted, and in this position placed over the sponge and moved up and down a couple of times with the hand of the operator. This motion compresses. the sponge, forcing out the water or soap-suds, with which it is charged, against the sides and inverted bottom of the tumbler, so as to thoroughly cleanse the same.

The flat base A is made heavy enough to hold the device steady in the tub, so that the sponge will remain stationary during the operation of working the tumblers up and down over it.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the base, the post fitted removably therein, and the sponge attached to the top of the post, substantially as and'for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the weighted base having a fiat bottom and provided with a socket near one side, the post fitted removably therein and having a transverse aperture at its upper end, the sponge, and the fastening-cord, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
