DISH-CLEANER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 555,671, dated March 3, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BLACKBURN,

V a citizen of the United States, residing at O- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dish-Vashers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of dish-washing machines; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved dish-Washer of simple and reliable construction by means of which dishes, knives, forks, spoons and other similar articles may be quickly and thoroughly washed, and toproduce other improvements which will be more specifically pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved washing device. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing one of the half-lids raised, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on line 0000 of Fig. 1.

In the construction of my improved dishwasher I employ a substantially bucketshaped body or casing a, preferably of sheet metal, said body being provided with a suitable bail-handle, as indicated at a. On opposite sides of the upper portion of the casing a I provide vertical sockets b, the latter being adapted to receive the downturned or vertical end portions of a bridge-bar b, which extends across the body a above the center thereof. To the center of the bottom of the casing Ct is secured the lower end of a spirallygrooved pin or rod 0, the latter extending upward preferably to about the height of the casing to. Passing downward loosely through the bridge-bar b is a tubular stem 0, the lower end portion of which is adapted to fit, as shown, Within a short vertical and central socket-piece cl, which rises from the floor of a washing case or basket 01. The tubular stem 0 is, as shown, adapted to fit loosely about the grooved rod 0, While the lower portion of said stem is surrounded by said washing-case, which is of such circumference as to result in the formation of a slight space between its periphery and the wall of the casing a. The washing case or basket has its sides and bottom perforated, as indicated at 61 Serial No. 560,465. (No model.)

From the central socket piece d of the washing-case radiate the desired number of grooved wings or blades e, the lower sides of the latter being secured to the bottom of said basket. Through corresponding threaded openings formed in said socket-piece (l and in the lower portion of the tubular stem 0 passes a threaded pin 6, said pin being thus adapted to connect the washing-basket and tube a and to project within the spiral groove of the rod 0.

The upper end of the tube 0 is provided with a crank-handle f. As indicated in the drawings, the upper side of the casing a is adapted to be closed by two half-disk-shaped lids g, which are hinged respectively to opposite sides of the casing-top, the inner and straight edges of said lids being provided with central recesses h to insure their fitting. about the stem 0.

The manner of utilizing my improved dish washer consists in first arranging the dishes or other articles to be washed within the basket d and between the blades 6 thereof, then filling or partially filling the casing to with hot water and imparting a rotary or reciprocating movement to the stem 0.

Owing to the fact that the pin eis projected into the spiral groove of the rod 0, it is obvious that turning the handle f will not only result in a rotation of the stem 0 and basket 61', but that said basket will travel up and down within the casing a, the pin 6 filling the spiral groove of the rod 0. In this manner it will be observed that the combined rotary and vertical movement of the washingcase will be had within the water which is contained in the casing a, and that the dishes and other articles contained in said basket will thus be subjected to the desired frictional and washing contact with the water.

It is evident that by so turning the handle f as to raise the dish-supporting basket above the water said basket may be retained in a desirable position for draining the dishes con tained therein.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a dish-washing device the combination with the casing a and a vertical spirallygrooved rod therein, of a washin g-basket surloosely through the bridge-bar l1 and adapted to inease the grooved rod 0, a pin (2 connecting said Washing-basket and tubular stem and projecting Within the groove of the rod 0 and means for rotating said stem 0 substantially as and for the purpose specified.
