Description

(No Model.) I
F. MUELLER. VALISE TO BE CARRIED UPON BIGYGLES. N0. 553,786.
Patented Jan. 28, 1896.
qx i/tmoaoaa UNITED STATES PATENT EEIcE.
FRANK MUELLER, OF REEDSBURG, WISCONSIN.
VALISE TO BE CARRIED UPON BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,786, dated January 28, 1896.
Application filed September 3, 1895. $erial No. 561,261. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reedsburg, in the county of Sauk and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Valise or Bag to be Carried upon a Bicycle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved valise, hand-bag, medicine-case or the like, adapted to be secured to the frame of a bicycle or like machine, and it consists of certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the upper part of the frame of a bicycle, showing a valise constructed according to my invention secured thereon. Fig. 2 represents a section along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and looking to the right. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the valise in the opened position, and Fig. 4 represents a section along the line 4 4 of Fig. l and looking toward the top of the sheet.
A represents the valise or satchel, which is provided with metal bows a, as usual, but these bows are bent, as at a, to receive the cross-bars O of the bicycle-frame, and as at a to receive the steering-head B, these two bows being hinged together, as at a", in the usual way and locked at a To prevent the contents of the valise from chafing against the parts of the bicycle, I provide an apron D, of leather, cloth or like material. This apron D is folded at its middle, forming two flaps which protect the contents of each side of the valise, and is secured at each end at the folded portion to the ends of the valise at or near the hinges thereof. The bent portions a and a may also be lined with soft elastic material'of any nature, if desired.
For medicine-cases for doctors use, the
hinge d may be placed at or near the bottom of the valise, instead of at the center thereof, as shown in Fig. 4.
WVhile I have-shown an ordinary valise or hand-satchel, it will be obvious that the invention is applicable to leather bags, boxes, &c., of every description, which are ordinarily used for transporting small articles of baggage and the like. i
It will be obvious that various modifications of the herein-described device might be made which could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a boX, bag or case, provided with metallic ribs or bows hinged together and indented to fit on the frame of a bicycle, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a box, bag or case, provided with metallic frames or bows hinged together, and indented to receive parts of the frame of a bicycle, with means for locking said bows together, substantially as described.
3. As an article of manufacture, aboX, bag or case, provided with metallic ribs or bows hinged together, and indented to fit on the frame of a bicycle, and a flap or apron secured beneath the said hinges and adapted to wrap around the said frame, substantiallyas described.
4. As an article of manufacture, a bOX, bag or case, provided with rigidframes or bows, hinged together and indented to receive parts of the frame of a bicycle, means for locking said bows together, and a flap or apron secured beneath the said hinges and adapted to wrap around the said frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK MUELLER. Witnesses:
WV. MILEs, GUSTAVE E. DAUGEL.
