SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,630, dated January 28, 1896.

Be it known that I, ELAH TERRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Copying Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of multiple copying devices, and has particular relation to the construction of the case and frame for holding the same.

The objects of my invention are to provide a copying device and s upporting-case therefor of superior construction and arrangement of parts; to provide improved means for retaining the surface of the copying-pad level; to prevent the liquids or other similar material being taken up or absorbed by contact with the retaining-case, and to provide other improvements, which will be more fully set forth hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved copying device, showing the case open, and showing the straight-edge used in leveling the printingpad surface in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the printing-pad and its case, showing the lid of the latter closed.

In the construction of the copying-pad support and case I employ a base-plate a, which has a raised marginal or frame portion b. On the depressed or body portion of this base and within the margin or' frame I) I provide a plate or panel 0. Upon the panel 0 is supported a glass plate or slab d, and upon this glass plate is supported a suitable printingpad c. This pad may be composed of any suitable printing or copying compound.

it represents a case, lid, or cover, which is hinged to the base a, and which is designed to form a cover for the latter. This lid also has a raised marginal portion 2' on its inner face, which, when the lid is closed downward, rests on the base-frame b. WVithin the lidframe is secured a glass plate k, which is designed to come into contact with the upper surface of the printing-pad when the case is closed.

. In orderto facilitate the smoothing or leveling of the pad-surface I employ a suitable straight-edge, such as shown at min Fig. 1 of the drawings. By drawing this straightedge over the pliable pad-surface and at the same time over the upper surface of the frameflange g the pad is given the same level as the frame-flange, and the latter is made to serve as a level guide for the pad. The frame f will also operate to hold the pad against sinking at its edge and prevent the formation 7 5 of inequalities in the surface of the pad.

Owing to the fact that the under side of the pad is resting on a non-absorbent material and that a similar material is provided in the lid for contact with the upper surface of the pad, the pad-moistening substance will not be absorbed from the clay or body of the pad.

The pad herein described is designed to be used for the reproduction of drawings,printed matter, &c., in the usual manner.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
