ADVERTISING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 553,598, dated January 28, 1896. Application filed April 15, 1895. Serial No. 545,803. (No model.)

Be it known that I, MYRoN H. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, andthe figures of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a portion of a door, looking from the inside, showing my'advertising device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail of the spring and block, showing the position of the spring when the door is closed and the advertising device is hanging in a perpendicular position. Fig. 3 is a detail of the same7 showing the position when the door is open. Fig. 4 is an end view of my advertising device with the sprin g attached. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the block and spring through line 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6l is a front View of my advertising device, and Fig. 7 is a back view of the same.

This invention relates to certain improvements in advertising devices; and it consists of a frame adapted to hold a card with the ,desired advertisement on it, and the means of securing said frame to the inside of the door in one position when the door is closed and in another-when said door is open.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a door-casing.

2 is a door-stile, and 3 represents a glass in the door.

4 is a portion of the frame of the advertising device.

5 represents a chain, one end of which is attached to the door-Casin g at 7 and the other end is attached to the frame 4 with the screw G. The frame 4 is pivotally held to the block 9 by the screw 8.

10 represents screw or nail holes for securing the block 9 to the door-stile through the medium of screws or nails.`

12 represents the portion of the block 9 around which the spring 11 is coiled.

14 is a loop on the end of one of the arms of the spring, which attaches to the frame 4 with the pin 19. 15 represents the loop on the end of the other arm of said spring for securing said spring to the block 9 in the ren cess 18 by the screw 16. 17 represents a recess in said block 9 to allow the arm 14 to freely swing around to carry the frame 4 from a perpendicular to a horizontal position.

20represents a portion of the frame 4 adapted to receive an advertising-card 21.

Other kinds of sprin gs maybe used in place of the coil-spring used in connection with the block and frame.

In placing this advertising device on the door the block is secured to the door-stile with screws or nails. The chain 5 isV first attached to the frame 4 at 6. Then the opposite end is attached to the door-casing, so as to hold the frame 4 in av perpendicular position when the door is closed. The block 9 is placed so the spring 1l will be just stiff enough to swing the frame 4 to a horizontal position when the door is opened. If the spring should be too weak to bring the frame 4 to the desired position, the block is twisted around to the left and secured to the door. When the door is closed the advertising device stands in the position shown by the solid lines in Fig. 1, and as the door is swung open it slackens the chain 5, which allows the spring 11 to swing `the frame-4 up to the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, which will attract the attention of the person openingthe door,when the advertisement on the card will be seen.

The cards can be changed at will by slipping one out of the portion 2O of the frame 4 and putting another one in its place. l

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. In the herein described advertising device consisting of a frame for removably holding an advertising card, said frame pivotally secured to the door stile, a chain with one end secured to said frame, the other end secured to the door casing, a block having the post 12, and the depressed portions 17 and 1S, a coil spring with one end secured in said depressed portion 18, the other end of said spring adapted to swing in said depressed portion 17 to govern the distance of the swin g of the frame.
