LETTER-CLIP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,255, dated January 21, 1896. Application filed February 25, 1895. Serial No- 539,691. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, COLIN CAMPBELL MC- PHEE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Chatham, in the county of Kent, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Letter-Clip, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in letter-clips, in which a skeleton wheel made of a set of parallel bars with bent ends converging into hubs, acting 011 the principle of a turnstile, in conjunction with a pair of coil-springs attached to a baseboard upon which said wheel rests, receives letters and holds them in place; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to facilitate the introduction of letters into the clip, and, second, to hold all letters already introduced firmly in their place while successive letters are being introduced. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side View of machine, showing position taken by turnstile-Wheel in its revolution. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of machine, showing position of turnstile-Wheel as it is partially revolved from one position to another at time of receiving letter.

Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout both drawings.

The clip consists of an ordinary baseboard E on which letters lie, a stop-block B running transversely across board E at upper end and secured to it, a hanger G secured at upper end of board E, a pair of coil-springs C O firmly secured one at each end of andat base of block B at F F, loose ends of which are bent and act as axles on which revolve the hubs D D, a turnstile-wheel consisting of a series of arms a a a, a attached to hubs D D with parallel bars a a a a bent at each end and converging into hubs D D, into which they are securely fastened. This turnstilewheel with parallel bars a a a a in succession rests and acts upon face of base-board E, being held down upon it by the pressure exerted downward by the coil-springs C C acting at each end upon the hubs D D.

The method of operating clip is as follows: Letter to be filed is inserted between the pair of bars resting upon board E and the pair above them of turnstile-wheel, so that in serted end of letter is stopped against block B. The wheel is then revolved forward and downward. In process of revolution the lower rear bar, which may be a or a or a or a is withdrawn from beneath letter and raises upward, the lower forward bar moves back, and the upper forward bar moves down upon letter inserted, holding it firmly in its place, the process being repeated each time a letter is introduced. Thus it will be seen that all letters already filed in clip are held in position while an additional letter is being introduced.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination in a letter clip of a base board E having hanger G, a stop block B, coil springs C, C, secured one at each end to base of block B, with free ends toward each other, on which revolves a wheel in the form of a turnstile all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
