Description

(No Model.)
- I D. L. BARNES. BEACH POCKET. I
No. 553,048. Patented M11 14, 1896.
iNVENTUR ATTYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
DAVID L. BARNES, OF CHICAGO, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
BRACE-POCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,048, dated January 14, 1896.
Application filed May 18, 18 91. Serial No- 393,240. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. BARNES, of Chicago, Cook county State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brace-Pockets, of which the following is a full, true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved construction of pressed steel formed of one piece of metal of the part known as a bracepocket in freight-car construction.
By my improvement I provide a pocket in which the side body-braces are supported and through which the sill-and-plate rods pass. This structure is lighter than any similar construction. heretofore employed, is likewise stronger, and simultaneously receives the sill-and-plate rods and the side bodybraces.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an elevation of a single pocket; Fig. 2, a cross-section therethrough;
- Fig. 3, a vertical elevation of a double pocket;
Fig. 4, a cross-section therethrough, and Fig. 5 a general View of the arrangement of the pockets in a car.
A A represent the pockets.
E represents the body-post; F, the side body-brace; I), the sill-and-plate rod; C, a channel pressed in the brace-pocket for the passage of these rods, these three parts being received by the brace-pockets.
As shown, the brace-pocket is wider at the portion which receives the body-post and is narrower at the portion which receives the side body-brace. It is of general trough-shape and is arranged to receive either one or two side body-braces. The sill-and-plate rod D passes through the bottom of the troughshaped pocket, either through the wood of the side body-brace, as shown in Fig. 2, or through a special pocket which may be pressed in the side of the brace-pocket, as shown in Fig: 4.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A brace pocket for car construction having an open top and solid sides and bottom formed of pressed steel, one of said sides being pressed out to form a socket substantially as described. 7
2. A brace pocket for car construction having a broader portion for the reception of a body post and a narrower portion for the reception of a side body brace, substantially as specified.
3. The brace pocket A formed of pressed steel and having a broader portion for the reception of the body post and a narrower portion for the reception of the side body brace, and having a projecting channel for the reception of the sill-and-plate rod, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID L. BARNES.
