Description

R. M. DALBEY."
Fruit Jar. No. 55,248. Patented June 5, 1866.
Witnesses= I ntdn AM. PHOT0'LlTHO.CO-N.Y. (USBDRNE'S PROCESS) PATENT OFFICE,
REUBEN M. DALBEY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVED FRUIT-JAR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,248, dated June 5, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN M. DALBEY, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention consists in forming serrated projections or lugs on the neck of thejar, and using in connection therewith a yoke and cam for securing the cover, so as to keep the jar closed air-tight and prevent the same from becoming loosened in handling or transportation.
In the drawings, A represents the ordinary glass fruit-jar having the inclined projections or lugs to upon the outside of the neck.
B represents a yoke made of metal of proper form and size to pass over the top and have its points hook under the lugs a, on opposite sides.
I) is a cam-headed lever pivoted to the yoke B at its center', and which, when turned over as shown, impinges uponthe cover 0 and presses it down tightly upon the top of the jar, the rubber packing 0 serving torender itair-tight,
these last features being the same as shown in my former patent. As formerly constructed, these lugs to were smooth, and consequently when thejar was handled or shaken about in the ordinary course of transportation the yoke was apt to slip on theinclined lugs, and thereby admit the air into thejar, the cover becoming thus loosened, by which means the fruit was spoiled. As shown in the drawings, I now make the under surface of these projections a notched or serrated, so that when the yoke 13 has its ends or hooks placed in these notches and the lever pressed down the yoke remains securely in place and the jar kept closed pert'ectly tight, however much it may be shaken or handled.
By these means I furnish a fastening that is perfectly secure and that greatly lessens the liability of loss or injury to the fruit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The lugs or projections to, having notches on their under surfaces, as and for the pur pose set forth.
2. In combination with ajar having the serrated projections, the yoke B and the camheaded lever D, arranged to operate as shown and described.
REUBEN M. DALBEY.
