LUNCH-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,131, dated December 31, 1895.

Be it known that 1, JOHN ROBERTS LITTLE- FIELD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lunch- Boxes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

My invention relates to lunch-boxes; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings, and to the claims hereinafter contained, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.

Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a lunch-box embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a central vertical and longitudinal section of the same on line at zc-on Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line y y on Fig. 2, looking toward the right of said figure; and Fig. 4 is a plan of a piece of material from which the main body of the cover is to be formed by folding or bending certain parts thereof at right angles to the main or central portion.

In the drawings, A is the main body of the box made of the bottom a, sides 6 b, and the ends a c, all made in one piece.

B is the cover, composed of the top 01, sides 6 e, and ends (1 cl, said top, sides, and ends being formed from a piece of material made from flax tow, which is known as fiber. To form the cover, the ends cl d and the extensions of the sides e c are folded at right angles along the dotted lines (1 d The sides 6 e are also folded at right angles along the dotted lines 6 6 and the extensions of the sides 6 e are then secured to the ends d d by rivets, as shown in Fig. 1.

The body of the box is cut from the same material and is of the same form as the cover, except that the sides and ends are wider than the sides and ends of the cover, and said sides I) b and the extensions thereof are bent at right angles to the parts to which they are attached, as described in connection with the cover, and said extensions are secured to the ends 0 c by riveting, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. D is the handle of the box, and is secured to the top of the cover by rivets at n n, as shown in Fig. 2.

C is a leather strap secured permanently by one end to one end 0 of the body of the box by a rivet j, extending up and over the top of the cover and passing through holes in the handle at o 0, and is fastened at its other end by the buckle lmvhich is connected by the leather loop Z and the rivet m to the opposite end 0 of the box, all as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

It will be seen that the strap 0 and the handle D are so arranged as to hold the cover and body of the box together, both when the box is closed and when it is open; also that the result of running the strap freely through holes in the handle, which is fixed to the cover, is that the box may be packed to its utmost capacity and the strap fastened without changing the position of the handle from the center of the cover.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A telescopic box provided with a permanently secured handle, and a single, central securing strap having adjusting means to permit of expanding and contracting the box; said strap being passed loosely through open ings at both ends of the handle and extending in the direction of the length of the handle, substantially as set forth.

2. .A telescopic box provided on its upper side with a handle secured permanently at both ends, and having openings or slots therethrough, at its ends, from its inner to its outer face, a single, central strap extending freely or loosely through both of said openings or slots and in the direction of the length of the handle, and secured at one end to the body of the box, and a buckle at the opposite side of the body to engage the free end of the strap, substantially as set forth.
