Description

S, STU'ART..
' Rotary Brush 5 Patented May 29, 1866;
UNTTE STATES ATENT OFFICEO IMPROVED ROTARY BRUSH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,176, dated May 29, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAS STUART, of Sterling, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefulImprovementin Cylinder-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present inventionrelates to that class of brushes used in lathes for the polishing of metals, and known as cylinder brushes, and it consists in forming the holder for the bristles used in sections, but in such a manner that when joined togetherthe exterioror periphery of the bristles will be unbroken throughout the entire length of the brush, while at the same time a brush of any desired length may be formed by simply using the requisite number of sections of the bristle-holders to produce the same, the importance and many advantages of which are obvious.
In accompanying plate of drawings my in1- proveinent in cylindrical brushes is illustrated, Figure 1 being a side view of one section of the bristle-holder, showing a few of the series of bunches of bristles inserted in the same; Fig. 2, an edge view of two sections of the bristle-holder, showing the manner in which they are interlocked with each other to accomplish the result aimed at by the present invention.
AA in the drawings represent two sections of the bristle-holder, the number of which,
however, to be used for forming the brush being more or less, according to the length of brush desired. These sections A are round and of a ring shape, being made of metal and any other suitablematerial, and with a series of apertures, a (1, extending through the same, in each of which a bunch of bristles, b, is fastened in any suitable manner. Both sides of each of these sectional rings A of the bristleholder are formed with a series of similar radial corrugations, f), and teeth 9 g of corresponding size and shape, which corrugations and teeth extend entirely around the rings, and when one ring is placed side by side and against another interlock with each other, thus enabling the various sections of the bristle-holder of the brush to be so brought together'as to produce an unbroken bristle periphery and surface throughout the entire length of the brush, whether greater or less, the zulvantage's and importance of which are well known, this construction of the bristle-holder enabling the brush to be readily made of any length desired.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A The perforated corrugated toothed cylinder A, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 6th day of February, A. D. 1866.
SILAS STUART.
