COMB.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. MCLEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combs for toilet or any other use, and has for its object to provide a simple, novel and inexpensive comb having detachable or removable teeth, so that when a tooth becomes broken it may be readily removedand replaced by another tooth, thereby restoring the comb to its original intact condition.
Other advantages constituting objects of this invention will be readily and more fully seen for the subjoining description and drawings.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a comb embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a back comb, representing a modified form of my invention and the way in which it may be used in connection with diflerent styled combs. Fig. 4: is a transverse vertical sectional View taken on the line 4-4. of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawing, the reference character 1 designates the end teeth of my improved comb having an enlarged top portion or head 2 which is secured or fixed between converging side plates or strips 3 and adapted to close the ends thereof. Between the said end teeth are arranged a plurality of removable, elongated teeth 4: which are frictionally held between the converging faces of the side strips 3. Each tooth is provided with an enlarged head or spacing block, as will readily be seen by reference to Fig. 1, so constructed, that, when placed against an adjoining tooth, a space will be formed between the teeth. movable teeth at have been placed in posi-' tion between the end teeth 1 and side plates 3 of the comb, a solution of cement or adhesive substance is poured across the top of Specification of Letters Patent.

said teeth as indicated by 3, thereby secur- 7 ing the teeth in a fixed relation to each other and preventing them frombecoming dislodged or disengaged from between the side or facing strips. The head of each tooth is wedge shaped to enable it to fit snugly between the converging side strips 3. After the teeth and binding or side strips have been placed in position a suitable cover 5, constructed of some flexible or spring material is sprung over the back of the comb thereby making a novel, cheap and inexpensive comb of the class described.
In Fig. 3 will be seen a modified form of my invention showing the manner in which my particular construction of comb may be used in the manufacture of different styles of combs. Mounted between adjacent facing plates 6 are a plurality of teeth 7 relatively disposed and spaced between fixed end teeth 8 which serve to close the ends of said facing plates 6. The teeth 7 are provided with correspondingly converging heads 9 which are adapted to be held in frictional engagement with the side strips 6 and thereby prevent any possibility of the teeth becoming dislodged downwardly. A. suitable cement or adhesive substance is then poured across the top of the teeth thereby fixing the said teeth firmly between the facing strips 6. comb is a suitable cover 10 adapted to be sprung over the same as aforesaid.
From the foregoing description, it will be observed that when a tooth becomes broken, one may remove the cover, and knock out the remaining portion of the tooth and replace it with a new tooth after which the cover may be replaced, therebyrestoring the comb to its original intact, perfect condition. If deemed preferable, an extra number of teeth may accompany each comb at the sale thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is
A comb comprising end teeth having outwardly widened heads formed with oppositely inclined side faces that converge toward'the shanks of said teeth, side plates secured on said inclined side faces of the heads of said end teeth, said side plates c011- verging toward the shanks of said teeth, in- In testimony whereof I afliX my signature terniediate teeth having similarly shaped 111 presence of two Witnesses.
heads disposed and fitted between said side T plates and an adhesive backing 0n the outer JOHN MCLEAL' ends of the heads of said intermediate teeth, Witnssesf coacting therewith and wlth said side plates GEO. T. Fox,
to secure said intermediate teeth in place. MINNA C. F 02;.
