Description

S. H. WINDLEY.
HAME HOOK.
' .(No Model.)
.No. 551,661. Patented Dec. 17, 1895.
WITNESSES INVE'JK TOZ? iJNiTED States- PATENT FFICE,
SAMUEL II. VVINDLEY, OF TRENTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SPENCER I-I. PHILLIPS, OF JONES COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA.
HAM E-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551 ,661 dated December 12', 1895.
Application filed June 21, 1895. Serial No. 553,552. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. IVINDLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Trenton, in the county of Jones and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in flame-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in IO the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to l1t1116l100kS, and its object is to provide an improved device of this character, which will be simple and economical in construction, and which will possess superior advantages with respect to durability and efficiency in use.
The invention consists essentially in a rectangular metal plate, having one end bent or curved, forming ahook adapted to be engaged with the staple of a hame, and the other end provided with a pivoted plate, formed with four (more or less) arms, curved upwardly, forming hooks, and a plate superimposed upon said rotatable plate and movable therewith, and provided with a number of spring-arms corresponding with said hooks and adapted to engage under the ends thereof, so as toprevent the accidental withdrawal-of a trace-hook engaged therewith, as will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a hame and hame-tug, showing the same connected together by my improved hook. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the hook detached.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral o 1 designates a hame of any ordinary or suitable construction provided with the usual staple 2.
The numeral 3 designates a rectangular plate, preferably of wrought iron, having one end bent into a hook 4, which engages with the staple 2. Pivoted to the other end of said plate by a pivot-pin or rivet 5 is a rotatable plate 6, formed with four radially-projecting and backwardly-turned arms, forming hooks 5o 7, having their extremities bent or curved in wardly or toward the plate forming lugs 8. Superimposed upon this plate 6 is a plate 9,
which is clamped between the latter, and the head 10 of the rivet or pivot-pin, so as to rotate with said plate. This plate is formed with 5 5 a number of outwardly-projecting springarms 12, corresponding in number with the hooks 7 and having their extremities bent or curved, forming lugs 13. There are four of the hooks 7 and arms 12 shown in the drawings, but more or less may be employed, as found convenient or desirable.
The numeral 14 designates a trace-tug, and 15 a ring or hook at the front end thereof.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The hook 4 is engaged with the staple 2 of the hame, and then given a light blow with a hammer or other tool, so that it will be bent sulficiently to prevent its accidental disengagement. The trace-hook 15 is then engaged with one of the hooks 7, the springarm 12 thereof keeping it in place. IVhen said hook becomes worn, or should be broken, the plate 6 is rotated, carrying with it the plate 9, to present a new hook for engagement with 7 5 the ring. It will thus be seen that the device will last much longer than the ordinary hooks, which are useless when once broken or worn out.
IVhile the device is peculiarly adapted for use as a hame-hook, it is obvious that it may be employed as a back-band hook or for other purposes without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, 8 5 what I claim is- The combination with the rectangular plate having one end formed into a hook, of the rotatable plate provided with radial arms bent inwardly forming hooks, and their eXtremi- 9o ties bent inwardly forming lugs, the headed pivot pin, and the plate clamped between the head of said pin and the rotatable plate, formed with spring arms corresponding and engaging with. the lugs of said hooks; substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, SAMUEL HI. WINDLEY. Witnesses V. H. 00X, Ms. B. STANLEY.
