This invention relates particularly to the fastening of the lid or cover on a centrifugal drum in such a way that the lid will always 1 5 occupy the same position on the drum. Hitherto'it-has been customary to secure the lid directly to the drum by screwingit on the same. The screw-threads, however, soon become worn, and even when this does not pre- 2o vent the lid from being tightened in the usual way it generally has the result that the-lid, after being tightened, sits unevenly or in an oblique position on the drum. This fault, which the workman managing the apparatus 2 5' cannot correct, is very prejudicial to the motion of the drum as well as the separating operation, as it not only disturbs the centering of the drum, but changes the distance of the cream-outlet (on the lid) from the drum axis. The object of this invention is to improve the fastenings of the lid in such a way that screw-threads on the same are avoided, and this is effected by simply pressing the lid closely to the drum by means of a number of attachment-screws, which are in some convenient way united with the lid or with the drum. These screws may be arranged as shown on the accompanying drawings, where- 1n- Figure 1 is a vertical mid-section of the drum and cover, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of same, partly broken away to show the construction of the fastenings. Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modified construction of the upper part of the lid.
A represents the drum and B the lid or top part thereof. On the under side of the lid is a pendent guiding-flange b, which enters the drum, themargin of the lid resting on the upper margin of the drum. Where they rest, the one on the other, the lid andfdrum are grooved to receive the usual packingring 19.
Around the margin of the upper part of the drum A are formed projecting lugs a, prefs erably equally spaced, and on the lower part of a locking-ring 0, adapted to snugly embrace the upper part of the drum, are formed similar spaced lugs c, which project inwardly, and when the ring 0 is in place these lugs c maybe made to take under the respective lugs a on the drum by a partial rotation of the ring. At its upper edge'the ring 0 has an inwardly-projecting flange 0 which takes v over the margin of the lid B, and in this'65 flange are driven set-screws s, which bear or impinge'on the lid B and serve to press it down firmly on the packing-ring p and the drum.
In assembling the parts, the packing-ring 'is placed on the top of the drum, the lid B placed evenly thereon, and the ring C then placed in position. To do this, the lugs c on the ring are made to pass down between the lugs a on the drum. The ring (3 is then. turned so as to bring the lugs 0 under the lugs a, and the set-screws s are driven down firmly on the lid. v
The top part or lid B is necessarily open at the center, thus makingit necessary to employ marginal securing devices.
The upper portion of the lid or top part B may be shaped in any manner required, the form depending on the use to which the drum is to be put. Fig. 3, for example, shows a form somewhat different in this respect from that shown in Fig. l.
The bottom of the drum, if it is desired that the same be removable, may be secured by the same means as'that employed for the lid 0 or top partB.

The combination with a drum of a centrifugal apparatus, and a cover or top-part B, which rests on the drum, of a loose locking ring detachably engaging projecting parts on the drum and having an inturned' flange which takes over the margin of said. lid, and set-screws in said flange on the ring, which screws bear on the upper face of the flange on the 1id,substa ntia1ly as set forth.
