LOUIS KOSSUTH JOHNSON AND ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOlV, OF BROOKLYN, AS SIGNORS TO THE ALDEN TYPE MACHINE COMPANY, OF NETV YORK, N. Y.
TYPE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,387, dated December 17, 1895. Application filed June 10,1895. Serial No. 552,241. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LoUIs Kossorn J onsson and ABBor AUGUSTUS Low, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Holders, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilledin the art to which thein vention appertains to make and use the same.
Our improvements relate to devices for receiving and supporting a series of type-coir taining channels, and also to the type-containing channels themselves.
llerctofore we have made provision for supporting a plurality of type-containing channels together in a single holder in such manner that the lowest types in each column could be advanced simultaneously by suitable type-forwarding mechanism into suitable position for removal by hand from the front of a type-platform common to all.
Our present invention consists in providing for the adjustment, both individually and collectively, of the type-containing channels within the holder and with relation to the said common type-platform. Y
Ye are aware that such temporary typesupports are not new in the abstract as applied to type-containing channels; but no provision has heretofore been made to avoid the difficulties and danger arising from the projection of the end of the support outward at right angles to the channel, where it not only interferes with close packing or storing of the channels but also is liable to contact with extraneous objects during transporter: tion.
By providing for the adjustment of the type-containing channels with relation to the common type-platform We adapt the apparatus for use in connection with all sizes of types, whether arranged upon their edges or upon their flat sides, thus rendering the setter-case as a whole universal in application and equally effective for all classes and conditions of types.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the holder; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the lower portion of one of the 50 type-containing channels, showing the temporary type-support in position; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the handle of the temporary support turned over against the channel. Fig. 4 is a front view of the same; Fig. 5, a 55- plan of the temporary type-support. Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the holder, (to. Fig. 7, a top view of the device. Fig. 8 is a rear view of one of the channels.
The holder II, front plate F, type-platform '1, converging side walls 20 w, and reciprocating pusher Pare of any usual or desired construction and arrangement, the parts acting in conjunction, and the operation of forwarding and presenting the types being the same as heretofore set forth by us in prior patents.
The rear wall H of the holder H is formed with an adjustable section A, having the carriers a a for engagmcnt with the eyes or holes c cin the spines of the type-containing channels O C. The adjustable section consists, preferably, of a plate secured to the back wall H by a set-screw S, the shank of which passes through the slot c and engages with a female screw-thread tapped in said back walls.
The spine of each channel C is formed with a series of eyes or recesses c c, which admit of the hanging of the channel upon the plate A at slightly-variable heights. 13 y this means, where the types are arranged in the type-containing channels on their flat sides, the channels may be raised or lowered, more or less, to compensate for variations in the thicknesses of the different characters, the ends of the channels being Ithus adjusted individually 85 with relation to the type-platform T.
The series of type-channels are adjusted collectively and simultaneously by loosening the screw S, raising or lowering the plate A, more or less, and reclainping the screw.
In order to sustain the types in the containing-channels while being stored, transferred, or placed in the holder H we use temporary type supports I, consisting of the tongues iand flanges a" i". The flanges ll 5 enter slots 0 0 formed in the side walls of the channels O 0 near their lower extremities, and are thus enabled to hold the tongues '1: in position against the pressure of the columns of type.
The support I is formed with a handle J, hinged or otherwise pivotally connected thereto, so that, it may be turned out of the Way when not required to facilitate the insertion or Withdrawal of the support I.
hat We claim as our invention, and desire I to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the channel holder and type platform of a support for the channels which is adjustable for the purpose of regulating the position of the lower ends of said channels with relation to the said type LOUIS KOSSUTH JOHNSON. ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW.
