TYPE-SETTING APPLIANCE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LoUIs K. JOHNSON and ABBOT AUGUSTUS Low, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Settin g Appliances, of
which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
Our present invention relates to the form of setter-case set forth in our last application, filed January 30, 1896, Serial No. 577,438, in which a series of interchangeable channelholders fit into or upon a common table or support. In that case the holders were designed for a single prescribed size of type, containing channels which alone could be properly used in connection therewith.
A distinguishing feature of our present invention consists in adapting the holder to receive and adequately support various widths of type-channels, so as to render the case universal in adaptation, a single case or series of channel-holders answering for all the fonts used in ordinary composition. 7
Another feature of our present invention consists in making the body of the holder in two parts, which may be readily struck up or forged into shape, one piece fitting upon the table or support and being formed with the type and channel platform, and the other piece being adjustable vertically upon the first to gage the number of types to be removed from the channel, and being formed with a guiding-groove for the upper type and with an opening through which the upper type may be grasped, while, still in the said guiding-groove, for withdrawal and removal.
By our present construction any holder in a series may be quickly and conveniently re moved from or inserted into position on the common table or support without interfering with or disturbing those next adjoining.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a series of channel-hold ers constructed according to our invention; Fig. 2, a top view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are isometrical views of the parts of the holder detached and taken from different sides. The bed plate or table A may be of any desired length, according to the number of words or combinations to be provided for in a single case. with a series of equidistant sockets or mortises a a, coinciding in size and shape with the tenons b on the under sides of the holders B. The rear portion of the table A is formed Its front portion is formed 7 with parallel grooves a a for the rece tion 1 and guidance of the pusher-blades P, the latter beingconfined therein bya common cap O.
Each pusher-blade P is connected by a pitman q with an eccentric which is attached to a disk on a rotating shaft and is acted upon intermittently by mechanism like that shown in our last application, hereinbefore referred to, the operation of forwarding the types being substantially the same.
The holder B consists of the standard plate B, formed with the tenon b on its under side below the type-platform b, and having the rectangular flange b on its front side projecting transversely across and above the type-platform b.
The adjustable side wall B is secured to the standard plate B by a thumb-screw O, passing through the vertical slot b in the rectangular flange b said slot 6 being of greater width than the diameter of the screw to admit of the lateral adjustment of the plates B B with relation to each other, as hereinafter set forth.
The adjustable side wall B is formed at the rear with the lateral flange b, which constitutes the rear wall of the holder. The front of the adjustable side wall B is formed with the flange Z1 projecting laterally over the type-floor b and formed with the female screw-thread h for the reception of the inner end of the thumb-screw G. The front flange U of the adjustable side wall 13 is formed with an adjustable face-plate D, secured to it by anysuitable mechanism that will permit of its adjustment thereon laterally. The means shown in the drawings consists of two set-screws d, and a binding-screw (1, countersunk in the front flange I) and engaging with female screw-threads formed therein for the purpose, the set-screws (Z carrying the type face-plate D and regulating its position, while the binding-screw d binds it in the position desired.
The face-plate D is rectangular in crosssection, the flange (Z constituting the type face-plate and projecting through the vertical slot 1) in the adjustable side plate 13*. By this means a continuous unbroken surface is presented to the face of the type irrespective of the adjustment of the parts. Thus in most of the figures the holder is illustrated as closed or adjusted to the minimum width of type-channel, while in Figs. 18 and 19 the parts are shown as adjusted for a wider channel, in either case the flange b presenting a uniform surface to the face of the type.
Both the type face-plate D and the lower end of the front flange Z9 are formed with extensions d and 1), extending forward over the type-floor and acting as upper guards to the forwarded types. The inner edge of each extension d and I9 is grooved so as to form a guiding-channel e between them for the upper type in the word or combination, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 10, 17, and 20. It will be seen that this guiding-channel e is increased or reduced in width by the adjustment of the type face-plate upon the adjustable side wall B so that the adjustment of the holder with relation to the width of the type-channel regulates the width of the channel 6 to the width of the type to be used.
The adjoining edges of the guard extensions U (Z are recessed or left open fora short distance from their front edges to give access to the upper side of the highest type to facilitate the grasping or removal of the word or combination.
The spine of the channel F is recessed at its lower end, as at F, Fig. 23, to admit the pusher P, since the lower end of the channel rests directly upon the t-ype'floor b.
It will be seen that the lower edge of the rear flange b is in the same plane as the under side of the front guard Z1 (P, so that the adjustment of the side wall B vertically regulates the space above the type-floor at both front and rear to the height of the type to be accommodated.
The height of the slot f in the spine of the channel F is sufficient to accommodate the maximum number of types, and consequently the largest pusher used. For instance, in the drawings the device is shown as adjusted for five types, representing by way of illustration the maximum number to be accommodated in a single word or combination. Where fewer types are to be used, the ad justable side plate 13 is lowered to coincide with their combined thickness; that is to say, to limit the space above the type-floor to that required by their combined thickness, and a pusher of correspondingly less height is substituted for the pusher of maximum height shown in the drawings.
It will be seen that our channel-holders are duplicates and interchangeable, fitting into any of the series of sockets formed in the bed plate or shelf, provided with suitable typeforwarding mechanism for each channel when in place. It will also be seen thateach channel-holder presents a perfectly flush even surface on either side, the adjusting-screws being countersunk and there being no lateral protuberance, so that any channel-holder m ay be removed from the series and another substituted without disturbing the rest.
By ourconstruction We are enabled to apply the channel-holder when in a horizontal or inclined position instead of resorting to the old method of lowering the channel and 0011- tents into position in a fixed holder, thereby endangering the alinement of the types. The holder, when applied to the end of a type-containing channel, acting as a support for both types and channel, may be safely and 0011- veniently lowered into position upon a common supporting bed or table, Where it is held firmly and rigidly against lateral displacement or movement in any direction by its tenon b, which fits snugly any of the mortises in the support formed for this purpose.
Since in our system of assembling the types in word combinations it is desirable that each channel and holder shall be adapted for use in connection with any word of general use, we form our adjustable side wall with both front and rear type-guarding surfaces in the same plane, so that the adjustment of the side piece controls both the front and rear ends of the type, as hereinbefore set forth. We thus not only hold the advanced types snugly in front until removed by hand, but also counteract any tendency of the pusher, which must be of height equal or nearly equal to the height of the word or combination of types, to withdraw the types backward durin g its retractile movement.
The adjustment of the plates B and B with relation to each other to compensate for and to conform to the adjustment of the faceplate D on the side plate B is effected by means of the screw 0, the slot b in the front flange 19 being of sufficient width, as compared with the diameter of the screw, to admit of this adjustment, the head of the screw 0, or rather the Washer c, acting to bind and hold the plate B in the prescribed position.
What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a channel-holderhaving one side wall adjustable with relation to the other to compensate for variations in the Width of the type-containin g channel,of a type face-plate adjustable upon one part of the holder for the purpose of presenting a continuous unbroken surface to the face of the type, substantially in the manner described.
2. A type channel holder substantially such as described, having a forward extension or type-guard formed with a groove on its under side for the reception and guidance of the highest type, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. A type -channel holder substantially such as described, having a forward extension or type-guard formed with a groove on its under side for the reception and guidance of the highest type, the upper side of said groove being open near the front end of the guide for the purpose of giving access to the type, substantially in the manner and forthe purpose described.
4. The combination of the standard side plate B, and the adjustable side plate B formed with front and rear type-guards in the forward extension (1 substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
7. The combination of the standard plate 13, the adjustable side' plate B formed with the vertical slot b and the adjustable type face-plate D, formed with the lateral flange d substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
8. The combination of the standard plate B, formed with the front flange b having the vertical slot 19 the adjustable side plate 13 and the adj listing-screw C, engaging with said side plate B and of less diameter than the width of the slot b for the purpose of admitting of the lateral adjustment of the plates B, B with relation to each other, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
