To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ABBOT AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York,borough of Brooklyn,county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type Channels and Slugs, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to type-containing channels for use in type-distributing and typesetting apparatus in which the types are arranged upon their broad or flat sides in columns which the channels support and sustain laterally. These channels are transferable from the distributing apparatus to the setter, and vice versa, and are also used for storage purposes, so that it is desirable to render their manipulation and transportation convenient and to guard against any disturbance or displacement of the type.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the broad side of the lower portion of a type-containing channel made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing a lockingslug in position. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the channel, showing a top view of the locking-slug. Fig. 4.- is a face view of the lockingslug. Fig. 5 is a section upon the plane of line 5 5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an end view of the locking-slug. Fig. 7 is a section upon the plane of line 7 '7, Fig. 4.. Figs. 8, 9, and 1 0 are respectively elevations of the several parts of the slug. Fig. 11 is an elevation of the lower portion of the narrow side of the channel; Fig. 12, a similar view showing a modification in construction; Fig. 13, a view similar to Fig. 5, showing a modified form of slug for larger channel.

One side wall, or both, of the type-containing channel 0 is formed with a series of mortises or perforations c 0, parallel to the longitudinal edges of the channel and at distances apart that may be found most expedient in adapting the channel for use in connection with the various sizes or fonts of type. These mortises or holes a c are formed to receive a bolt or boss 1) upon the movable plate P of the slug S, said plate P being pressed outward by a spring 5, interposed between said plate and the inner wall of the slug, as will be seen by reference to Figs. 3, 5, and 7, the shoulders s 3' upon the slug-body limiting the outward movement of the plate P. The spring 3 allows the plate P to yield when the slug is placed in the channel until such time as the boss b comes into coincidence with one of the mortises a, when it immediately forces said boss into engagement with the side of the channel, thereby locking the types below. One or more of these locking-slugs may be used in connection with each channel, if desired. The slugs are unlocked by pressure applied to the boss I) and plate P through the perforations 0, so as to force them back against the resistance of the spring .9. The ends of the slug are beveled or rounded, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, to facilitate the introduction of the slug into the channel.

The lower side walls of the channel are formed with finger-spaces F F, which allow the operator to grasp the lower end of a column of type contained in the channel for the purpose of steadying and supporting the same while the channel is being removed from or inserted in position or while being trans ferred from one apparatus to another.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The type-slug S, having the spring .9, and movable plate P formed with the boss or bolt 1), adapted for engagement with holes or mortises in the side of a type-containing channel, substantially as set forth.

. 2. The combination of the type-containing channel 0, formed with the series of openings 0, in its side wall, and the type-slug S having the spring 8, and movable plate P, formed with the boss I), for engagement with said openings 0, in the side wall of the channel, substantially as set forth.
