ADVERTISING-CABINET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,009, dated December 10, 1895. Application filed August 8,1895. Serial No. 558,687. (No model.)

13e it known that I, CHARLES H. TEBBnTTs, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertisinglabinets; and I do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full,` clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will 1o enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in advertising-cabinets, and especially to those adapted to be placed upon hotel-counters for 15 the display of advertising-cards and also to serve as a receptacle for letters to be mailed,

' stationery, telegraph-blanks, ink, matches, toothpicks, and, in fact, all such articles as are usually found upon hotel-counters.

It consists of a body having a suitable bottom and back, inclined side braces extending from the back side to the front edge, a shelf rigidly attached to the rear wall, pockets for the reception of removable compartments, which are placed between the braces, and removable advertising-cards, which I preferably make of metal, upon which is engraved some suitable advertisement.

The invention further consists in a novel way of showing the advertising-cards and in a novel way of fastening said cards to the cabinet and in certain other details of construction that will hereinafter be more fully set forth and described.

In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of the application, Figure l is a front elevation with parts broken away, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal vertical section on the line a: in Fig. l.

The same letters and numerals refer to like parts.

In said drawings, A represents the side walls, B the rear wall, and C the base, which are preferably made of wood, and D the front wall, which is usually made of some metal capable of receiving a high polish.

Rigidly attached to the top of the rear wall are braces E and F, extending therefrom to the front wall, said braces E and F being provided with lips G and II on the outer edges,

said lips serving as a rest for the advertisingcards and receptacles when placed in position. Also rigidly attached to the rear wall B of said cabinet is a shelf consisting of the triangular side pieces J J and the bottom piece K. Removably attached to this shelf are two pedestals L and M, one intended for the reception of a call-bell and the other, M, intended to hold a vase or some other ornamental iigure. The outer edges of said tri- 6o angular pieces are provided, as the bracesbefore mentioned, with lips, which serve, also, as

a part rest for the advertising-cards when placed in position. Rigidly attached to the rear wall and extending therefrom to the front 6 5 wall midway between the said braces are also two wooden rests N and O, upon which the advertising-cards are placed, these rests serving to prevent the cards from falling in if any unusual pressure is brought to bear upon 7o them.

Prepared so as to be easily removed is a metal compartment P, which closely fits in between the bottom of the rigid shelf and the front wall D. In the top of said compartment is a slot Q, into which letters intended to be mailed may be placed. There are also smaller compartments R and S intended to hold matches and toothpicks, and at the bottom and made integral therewith is a plate 8o upon which I usually engrave the name of the hotel in which the cabinet is displayed. In the space between the brace E and the outer wall of the cabinet are pockets for the reception of removable Ymetal'boxes l 2 3 to contain envel- 8 5 opes, ink, and shot, and between the brace F and the outer wall of the cabinet are also placed similar pockets 4 5 6 for like purposes.l I also place advertising-cards in the same places or in the spaces not occupied by the 9o removable compartments, the side walls of the cabinet being'provided with lips'of the same kind as are on the braces E and F.

In the space between the brace E and the side walls of the shelf are inserted the advertising-cards, which I preferably make of metal, and to keep them firmly in place I fasten them by means of a metal bead T, which is held in position by means of a screw U. I insert, also, similar cards and hold them in like I oo manner between the brace F and the other wall of the shelf. The outer edges of the re movable compartment are also provided with lips V, which serve as the lips before mentioned to hold the advertising-cards in a proper position.

lt will be seen that when it is desired to insert a business or advertising card in the space allotted to them a person has only to remove the screws in one of the beads, lift the same off, and take out the card not desired to remain and insert another in the place thereof without disturbing any of the cards that may be in position.

In order to prevent the letters that may have been dropped into the letter-slot from falling too far away from the rear of the wall of the cabinet, l construct a vertical partition extending from the bottom of the front part of the fixed shelf to both side walls. In the rear walls l place a door fr, which is hinged and provided with a suitable lock, which will enable a person authorized to collect the letters that may have been deposited in the letter-slot to easily reach and take them away.

It will be seen that the whole cabinet will make a very neat and attractive device for hotel-counters and a ready and convenient way of showing and displaying advertisements.

llaving thus described my invention and its use, l claim l. In an advertising cabinet for hotel counters the combination of a body having a bottom piece, a rear wall, two side walls inclined toward the front, inclined braces extending from the rear walls to the front edge of said bottom piece, a shelf rigidly attached to the rear wall thereof, pockets between the said wall and inclined braces for the reception of removable compartments, suitable metallic cards inserted between said braces and rigid shelf, and means for holding the same in position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth,

In an advertising cabinet for hotel counters the combination of a body having a bottom piece, a rear wall, two inclined side walls, inclined braces extending from the rear walls to the front edge of said bottom piece, a shelf rigidly attached to the rear wall thereof, a removable compartment adapted to lit snugly between said shelf and the front edge of said bottom piece, the outer edges of which are provided with lips for the reception of metallic advertising cards and means for holdin said advertising cards firmly in position, substantially as and for purposes set forth.

3. ln an advertising cabinet for hotel counters the combination of a body having a bottom piece, a rear wall, two inclined side walls, inclined braces extending from the rear wall to the front edge of said bottom piece, said braces bein gprovided with lips on both sides, a shelf rigidly attached to said rear wall having inclined sides, the ou ter edges of which are provided with lips, a compartment for thereception of letters and like articles also provided with lips on its outer edges, pockets between said braces, and said outer walls for the reception of removable compartments, metallic advertising cards capable of being inserted between said inclined braces and said rigid shelf and between said solid compartment and said braces, an upright partition extending from the lower front edge of said shelf to both sides and means for holding said compartments and advertising cards in position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
