UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. DRAPER, OF IIOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE DRAPER & SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
RAIL FOR SPINNING AND TWISTING FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,910, dated December 3, 1895- Application filed October 17, 1893. Serial No. 488,372. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. DRAPER, of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Rails for Spinning and Twisting Frames, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In spinning and twisting frames using rings and travelers the rings are held in place about the spindle-openings by means of ring-holders, the holders being attached by screws which enter threaded holes in the rail.
This invention has for its object to dispense with independent holders for the rings and make projections integral with the rail serve the purposes of a ring holder. For the production of this kind of a rail I employ sheet metal, and at the proper points, usually two points about the ring, I strike up from the metal of the rail lips or projections to hold the ring and, preferably, a third lip or projection to serve the purpose of a traveler-clearer. This sheet-metal rail A will preferably have flanges f at its sides to give it the necessary strength and stiffness.
Figure 1 in perspective shows a ring-rail embodying my invention, together with a ring; and Fig. 2, a section of the said rail.
The rail A, composed of rolled or sheet metal and of usual cross-section, has punched in it spindle-holes a, and in accordance with my invention at suitable points outside said holes the metal of the rail is out and struck through to leave ears or projections b b to serve as holders to insure the retention of the ring a, which may be of any usual shape common to double-raced rings. The rail has also struck up from it a projection c, it constituting a traveler-clearer.
The traveler 75 runs on the uppermost race of the ring, and the projection 0 acts to clear the traveler of lint, &c.
Prior to my invention the rails, of whatever metal or shape, have been provided with screw-holes to receive the screws employed to confine in adjusted position on the rail the sheet-metal holders which retain the rings in position concentric to the spindle-openings, and such sheet-metal holders have had portions turned or struck up to form ears or proj ections to confine the rings in place.
In my invention I avoid the expense of the independent ring-holders,the expense of making threaded holes in the rail, and the expense of screws, and I also lighten the weight to be lifted by the ring-rail and the power required to run the spinning-frame, such saving of power being considerable in a room full of frames, and, further, by making the ears or projections to hold the rings integral with the rail the danger of getting the ring out of proper position with relation to the spindle-opening is done away with.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A flanged ring-rail having spindle openings, and integral ears or projections located outside the spindle openings to serve as holders for a spinning ring, substantially as described.
2. A flanged ring-rail having spindle openings and integral ears or projections located outside the spindle openings to serve as holders for a spinning ring, and having an integral traveler-clearer projection, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEO. A. DRAPER.
