SLEEVE-WHIRL SPINDLE.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. OOVO, of Fall River, county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Sleeve-Whirl Spindles; of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
In the use of ring spinning frames in spinning, it is customary to provide the bolster case with a hook or other contrivance to overlap the upper portion of the band-receiving portion of the whirl to thereby prevent the lifting of the spindle from its bearings during the doing operation. The use of hooks to overlap a portion of the whirl, as stated, is objectionable because the hooks act to catch lint, and they arein the way of and frequently interfere with the bands, and the operator is delayed much in keeping clean the exposed parts of the bolster-case.
In accordance with my invention I have done away with the usual hook referred to, and instead I have provided the lower end of the whirl with a iiange, preferably made of a soft metal which can be cut and bent to form a band, this flange secured to the whirl cooperating With a suitable pin or projection extended horizontally from the bolster case, but located, however, within the chambered lower end of the whirl.

The rail A receives upon it the supporting case B held in place by the nut '0, said case containing in practice the usual bolster and step bearings for the foot of the spindle D having a sleeve whirl E. I have provided the supporting case externally with a pin or projection a, and I have provided the lower end of the whirl with a flange b composed preferably of wrought or sheet metal and notched, as at 2, to form an upturned tongue 3, the flange being herein shown as attached to the chambered lower end of the whirl by suitable screws 5 which should pass through holes 6, (see Fig. 3,) in the flange. When this spindle is to have its foot put into the bearing, the flange h will meet the projection a, and the whirl will be turned until the arrival of the slot 2 at the pin or projection a, and in 4this position the projection a will pass through the slot 2 and enter the chambered front end of the whirl above the plate b, which chamber in the whirl is sufficiently large above the free end of the tongue 3 to let the spindle and whirl revolvewithout the tongue striking the projection a. When the bobbins are being doffed, the iiange, by striking the under side of the projection a will prevent the spindle being lifted from its bearings. Should it be desired to remove the spindle from its bearings, the operator will lirst lift the spindle somewhat and will then rotate it in a direction opposite to its usual travel when spinning, until the end of the tongue 3 meets the pin a, and then the operator will further lift the spindle, the slotted portion 2 of the flange permitting the spindle to be lifted completely from its usual bearings. This invention is not limited to the exact shape of the projection a b, or to the exact part of the supporting case or rigid part of the spinning-frame to which it may be connected, so long as the end of the projection is adapted to and may enter the chamber at the lower end of the whirl.
My invention constitutes an inside catch to prevent the sleeve whirl spindle against unduly rising during the dofng operation.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sleeve, whirl spindle having an attached slotted iiange, and tongue located to partially cover said slot, combined with bearings for the spindle, and a pin or projection adapted to enter the chambered lower end of the whirl and co-operate with the said flange, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
