H. L. PEIROE. RING AND TRAVELER FOR SPINNING MACHINES. No. 547,937. Patented Oct. 15, 1895.

' PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
RING AND T RAVELER FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,937, dated October 15, 1895. Application filed March 15, 1895. Serial No. 5413934- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: B and has two slight flanges e e, turned up Be it known that I, HORATIO L. PEIRC-E, of at right angles to the plate for a short dis- Johnston, in the county of Providence and tance on two opposite side of the opening, be- State of Rhode Island, have invented certain tween which the ring is pressed in and held new and useful Improvements in Rings and by the contraction of the flanges. Two holes Travelers for Spinning-Machines; and I do or notches s are made in the plate of holder hereby declare that the following is a full, to receive the screws to fasten it to the ringclear, and exact description thereof, reference rail. This traveler in operation starts quickly being had to the accompanying drawings, and and runs smoothly and uniformly owing to 10 to the letters of reference marked thereon, the proportionatelygreat bearingithason the which form a part of this specification. surfaces of the ring and the distance between This invention relates to the rings and the foot under the ring and the top where the travelers for them used on ring-spinning mayarn 0 draws on the traveler. The centrifuchines. It is fully explained and illustrated gal action of the traveler in running throws 15 in this specification and accompanying drawthe inner leg 0. against the inner face of the iHg ring, so as to touch that surface its whole Figure 1 is a top view of the ring and travlength and give it a great bearing-surface, eler and the ring-holder by which the ring is which, with the wide bearing of the foot on held when in use. Fig. 2 shows a front elethe under side of the ring, leaves little if any 20 vation of the ring, traveler, and holder with chance for Wear. This ring and traveler efa part of a cop of yarn. Fig. 3 is a vertical fectnally prevent what is called ballooncross-section of the parts shown in Fig. 2 with ing of the yarn, and for which separators the part of a cop in elevation. Fig. 4 repreare devised in this way: When a bobbin or sents invertical cross-section a modification cop n is nearly full, which is the time when 2 5 of the ring with part of a cop of yarnin elethe ballooning takes place, the size of the cop vation. Figs. 5 and 6 represent side views and its rapid motion produce a strong cenof the travelers used on the rings. trifugal current of air that blows against the In its construction the ring B is made with long inner leg of the traveler and presses it straight vertical sides both inside and outharder against the inner face of the ring,
0 side and a plain horizontal top and bottom causing more friction and an increased tensquare, or nearly so, to the sides of the ring, sion on the yarn that prevents it from flying making the upper half and the lower half of out or ballooning. This increase of friction the ring just alike, that it maybe reversed in as the cop gets fuller is also very beneficial the holder A and used either side up with in another way-that is, in evening the ten- 35 equal facility. It has no thin edges to be sion on the yarn by causing it to draw harder worn into notches by the action of the travwhen the cop, being nearly full, is drawing on eler, but instead it has a wide bearing-surthe traveler in a direction nearly agreeing face inside, outside, and at the bottom for the with the line of its motion, and therefore traveler to run on. drawing it far more easily than it does when 0 The traveler a, as shown separately in Fig. the cop is small, and the direction of the draft 9o 5, has a long vertical inside leg at with afoot of the yarn on the traveler is more at an ana bent out at right angles to the leg, and a gle to the line of the travelers motion. slightly-curved top with a straight vertical In Fig.4 a modification of the ring is shown leg 0. down the outside, slightly curved out that is made to accommodate very light yarn I 45 at the lower end to facilitate the putting of it by lessening the weight of the traveler, which 5 on the ring. The outer leg is shortened up is done by shortening the inside leg. It conenough to clear the flanges e on the holder A. sists in making a plain narrow groove in the The ring-holder A consists of a circular fiat inner face of the ring about half-way down, plate having-a circular opening in it nearly so that the ring can be used either side up.
50 as large as the outside diameter of the ring The traveler is the same as before described,
except that the inner leg is shortened, (see Fig. 6,) so as to bring the foot a into the groove 0' (see Fig. 4) instead of under the bottom of the ring. lhe full-sized traveler of Fig. 5 can still be used on the ring the same as already described.
Having thus described my improvements, I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A ring for ring spinning machines, having right angled upper and lower corners to its inner face, in combination with a traveler having a straight inside leg and a fiat foot at with a traveler having a straight inside leg 20 with a Hat foot at right angles thereto, and a long outside leg, substantially as described.
