WASHBENCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 550,821, dated December 3, 1895.

Application filed February 12, 1895. Serial No. 538,069. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH I-I. GoLsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashbenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined washbenches and wringer-supports, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.

The object of this invention is to produce a washbench and wringer-support which can be folded to occupy a comparatively small space.

Furthermore, the object of the invention is to so arrange the parts that they will be automatically held when in their folded position, thus preventing the parts from falling open.

\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts in the views, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved bench, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bench.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the central standards having suitable bases 2, to which they are firmly secured. The bench proper is arranged 'on either side of the standards, and consist of duplicate pairs of side rails 3, pivoted to the standards at 4, and to the said rails the legs 6 are pivoted at each corner by means of transverse bars 5. The bottom braces 7 one on either side, are pivoted to the cross-bars 7 7 which join the bases and the legs, respectively. The said braces 7 are an ranged about centrally of the cross-bars and are provided with longitudinal slots 9, in which the bolts 10 of the braces 11 travel.

These braces 11 are diagonally disposed be tween the upper cross-bar and the lower brace and have their ends curved and bifurcated at 12 to fit over the brace '7, as will be apparent.

The wrin er-su ort 13 is secured at the e PP top of the stand and serves as a top brace. The water-shedding device 14 is pivoted to the standards at either end and is held in the adjusted position by a button 15, (shown in full lines, Fig. 2, while in dotted lines the 0pposite edge is shown elevatedg) but as this forms no part of my invention detailed illustration is thought unnecessary.

By means of the construction shown and described it will be seen that when the bench is down, as shown on one side of Fig. 1, it is perfectly braced and will stand great strain, while the bench in its folded position is automatically held by reason of the peculiar form and arrangement of the braces as the

5 and 7 When the ends are folded thus, the bench can be moved without fear of the ends falling apart. In fact, they can be extended onlyby a direct horizontal pull. The curve in the diagonal brace 11, it will be seen, allows the cross-bars 7 to pass further in toward the standards than it could when an ordinary straight brace is used.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A washing bench consisting of a folding frame composed of horizontal sections which are formed by side bars pivoted to the standards, legs at the end of the side bars connected by transverse bars at the top and bottom, a

bottom brace having a slot-way and a diagonal brace having a curved lower end which is bifurcated to fit over the slotted brace, and having a pin extending through the end and working in the slot, substantially as described.
