Be it known that LFRnDERrcK CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

My invention relates to inkstands, and has for its object to provide an improved case for the ink-well, adapted to removably secure the well in any desired iixed position.

To this end my invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, and deiined in the claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, therein like letters referring to like parts.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the inkstand, secured to a school-desk or other support, with the parts of the stand locked together in their closed position, some parts of the desk being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the parts shown in Fig. l on the line X X of Fig. l, with the key of the lock in its seat. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line X2 X2 of Fig. 2, looking from the top. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the case detached, with the cover and body-section separated and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line X X3 of Fig. 5.

My improved inkstand was especially designed for use in schools to prevent the removal of the ink-wells from the desk, except as permissible for cleaning, with a View of thereby avoiding the loss incidental to breakage of the wells and the waste of the ink and the nuisance resulting from the spilling and splattering the ink, which is so common with the ordinary inkstand. To these ends I employ a flanged rimmed open-topped well a, of glass or other suitable material, which I pref erably construct with at least one ilat side, as shown at d'5 For this well I provide a twopartor sectional case, consisting', as shown, of the body-section b and the top or a cover-section c, and combine with the saine a suitable lock for securing the said sections together in their closed position in respect to each other.

top and is provided with one flat side, as shown at b', for co-operation with the iiat side a of the well a, when in working position, to prevent the well from turning in the case. The body-section o is also provided near its top with a laterally-extended annular flange or collar U2, adapted to rest in the countersunk seat for the stand, formed in the desk d or other suitable support and to be secured thereto, so as to remain fixed therewith by lagscrews b3, or in any other suitable way. The body-section b is also provided with a rimiiange b4, which cooperates with the collar or flange b2 to form a groove or seat b5 for cooperation with a clamping-collar carried by the capsection o.

The cap-section c is provided with a central perforation or hole c for the passage of the pen and holder in dipping the saine in the ink, and with a pivoted lid c2 for said dip-passage, which plays within a countersunk seat c3, formed on the face of the capsection. The said Vcapsection is provided on its interior with a pair of jaws c4, pivoted to the top wall of the cap, as shown at c5, and subject to the action of a spring c6, which tends to throw the jaws into their closed position. The said jaws cLL and spring c constitute together a springclosing clamping-collar, which is adapted to engage with the groove or seat b5 on the body* section when the two parts are in their closed position with respect to each other. The tips of the jaws meet at their outer ends, but are cut away inward of the said tips, as shown at c7, to afford clearance for the insertion of a key between the two. The top of the cap secn tion is also provided with a key-passage o8.

When the two sections of the case are in their closed position with respect to each other, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the cap-section will be locked to the body-section by the cooperation of the clamping-collar of the capand the seat for the same on the body; but the said two parts Z2 and c may be unlocked and separated from each other by the insertion and operation of the key f, which, when in position in its seats c7 o8, will, upon turning the saine, spread'the jaws c4 c4 of the clampingcollar apart and permit the cap-section to be lifted off from the body-section of the case.

The advantages of this form of inkstand IOO have alreadybeen noted. The particular construction shown is well adaptedfor the purposes had in View; but I do not desire to limit myself to this particular form, but wish to claim, broadly, any kind of an inkstand pro* vided with a lock for detaehably securing` the same in a lixed position, inasmuch as it is obvious that the details of the construction might be changed in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.

That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows: l. A case for an ink-well, comprising abody section, a cap or cover section, a loclvcollar seat in one of said sections, andalock engageable with said lock-collar seat, carried by the other of said sections, formed by a pair of semi-circular locking-jaws which are pivoted at their rear adjacent ends, and are provided with key-engaging surfaces at their free adjacent ends, adapted to be spread by the action of the key to disengage the jaws 'from said lock-collar seat, and a spring,` normally hold ing said lock-jaws in their closed position, substantially as described.
