Betknown that LCHARLEYALBERT Hurr- MASTER, a citizen of San Leandro, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Gates; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. v

My invention relates to that class of gates which have wind-vane attachments adapted to assist in the opening and closing of the gate.

My invention consists, in combination with a gate, of a wind-vane attached to said gate and means operated by the person opening or closing the gate for operating or adjusting the vane to present either its full face or its edg'e to the wind, according to the direction of the wind and the direction in which the gate is to be opened.

It also consists in novel details of construction and arrangement, which I shall hereinafter fully describe and speciiieally claim.

The object of my invention is to provide a gate with a wind-vane attachment adapted to be adjusted in such a manner that the gate may be readily opened with the assistance of the wind and closed again in the teeth of the wind with equal facility.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my gate. Fig. 2 is a modification showing the windvane as constructed of folding slats instead of a pivoted vane, as in Fig. l.

A is the gate` hinged to the gateepost a in suitable manner and adapted to be opened and closed by oppositely-extending cords B, connected with a segment O on the top of the gate-standard ct. This construction and the arrangement of the cords or lines B is a common one and needs no further explanation other than to say that it is to be understood that in connection with these devices, as in other gates of like character, means will be used for raising the gatedatch at the same time that the cords or lines B are pulled.

Extending rigidly from the hinged side or standard of the gate A is a frame E, in which is mounted the wind-vane- In Fig. l this vane is in thc shape of a piece D, pivoted upon horizontal axes d in the frame E, and one of said axes is provided with a pulley d',

from which cords d2 extend to the same point of reach or operation as the ends of the gateoperating cords B. The direction of these cords d2 from the pulley d/ is upwardly around pulleys c on the segment O, pulleys a2 on the gate-standard a', and down over pulleys b on the posts b in the roadway, and beside which the cords or lines B also hang.

Whem now, the rider approaches the gate and a heavy wind is blowing in his face and he has to open the gate against the wind, he turns the vane D broadside onto the Wind by pulling upon the cord d2, and then taking the cord B he pulls on the gate. The wind blowing on the vane assists him in opening the gate away from him.

Having passed the gate, then to close it he takes the cord d2 on the other side and by pulling upon it turns the vane D edgewise to the wind, and then taking the gate-operating cord B pulls upon it and the gate is easily closed, the more so that the wind, blowing on the gate itself, assists in this operation. Thus in any way that he finds the wind he can either turn the vane into or out of it to assist in the operation of opening or closing the gate.

In Fig. 2 the vane is in the shape of verti cally-connected slats or shutters F, which, by means of a weight lV, are kept normally in one position, and by means of the same arrangement of cords heretofore described can be turned to the other position., as maybe required by the circumstances of the case.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of a gate, an adjustable wind vane connected therewith and adapted to assist in the opening and closing of the gate, and means within reach of the traveler and adapted to be operated by him, for adj usting the vane broadside to the wind, or with its edge to the wind, according to the direction thereof, and the direction. in which the gate is to be opened or closed.

The combination of a gate, a frame rigidly secured thereto and extending backwardly from its hinge center, an adjustable wind vane mounted in said frame and adapted to be turned into or out of the wind as may be required, and means within reach of and IOO #cords connected with said vane and extending to Within reach of the traveler and adapted to turn the vane with its face or its edge to the wind as may be required.

5. The combination of a gate, a horizontally pivoted Wind vane attached thereto, a pulley on the axis of the wind vane and cords attached to said pulley, and thence extending to Within reach of the traveler 0n each side of the gate.

6. The combination of a gate, a frame rigidly connected therewith, a Wind vane pivoted in said frame and cords extending to Within reach of the traveler and adapted to turn the Wind vane with its face or edge to the Wind.

7. The combination of a gate having a seg* :ment upon its hinged standard, operating cords secured to said segment and extending to Suitable guide posts beside the road on each side of the gate and Within reach of the traveier, a frame rigidly secured to the hinged standard of the gate, a Wind vane pivoted in said frame, and ,cords connected With said Wind vane and extending to the posts beside the road and within reach of the traveler, for operating the Wind vane and throwing it into and out of the Wind.
