Description
UNITED STATES PATEMIEE@ WILLIAM Gr. COOK, OF NEW YORK, N: Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR GARMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55.064.\dated May 29, 1866.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. CooK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Fastening forGarments and other Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figurel is a side View of my invention. Fig. 2 is afront view ofthe same. Fig. is an end view of same; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing the application of my fastening.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in a novel construction of a fastening for garments and other articles of clot-hor flexible fabric whereby two parts or edges are held together by the compressive force of the instrument without the aid of any pins and without puncturing the fabric. f
To enable others skilled in the art to construct my invention and apply it to use, I will proceed to describe it, having reference to the drawings.
The instrumentA is formed of one piece of brass or other strong and'elastic sheet metal into the shape of the i'rustum cfa cone, the longitudinal -edges b b being left apart, so as to .form a tapered*longitudinal opening, e, the wider part of the opening being at the base of the cone. rIhe edges b b at the base are rounded olf to meet the longitudinal edges b b and form a taper, so as to present a gradual mouth or entrance to the longitudinal openin g. The smaller end, c, of the instrumentis also rounded off, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
'The following operation is necessary to secure two parts of a garment or pieces of a fabric together by this instrument. The two edges el el of the garment or fabric are brought together by the hand, and the longitudinal openingc of theinstrument is pressed overthe same, Wide end first, and pushed along the inclosed edges 0f the fabric until the entire length of the longitudinal opening in the instrument confines an equal length ot' the two edges ot' the fabric. ln this operation the elasticity of the metal allows the longitudinal opening e to adapt itseltI to the thickness of the garment or fabric. n
This fastening will be found very convenient for securing dresses, shawls, and childrens diapers, and in all cases Where a pin is considered injurious to the fabric, and, from its peculiar construction, it is not liable to become loosened or disengaged from the clothing by rubbing or working of the parts, as is often the case in the use of pins.
What I claim as my invent-ion, and desire to secure by` Letters Patent, 'as a new artic] of manufacture, is
A fastening for garments and other articles, constructed and operating substantially as herein described.
' WM. Gr. COOK. Witnesses:
A. LE CLERC, J. W. CooMBs.
